He's great. I'm having trouble getting into Small Change, though. I'm wondering if it just isn't meant to be.

That should be normal, what do you like so far? Theres a few mosters on that album that I think are worth it.

Invitation to the Blues

The One that Got Away

Pasties and a G-string.

Then you've got your weird ones and your slow-growers...

I wish I was in New Orleans and Jitterbug Boy are amazing if you get into them.

Step Right Up and The Piano has been drinking are oddities that are good to play during a house party when its raining. Their odd, conversational, background workings that tend to give everyone the right feeling about the place. Like they'd jsut stumbled into wonderland.

"I don't know whats going on here, or who these people are, but with this music on, it seems like anything goes. grab a drink and start talking to the artsy girl by the bookshelf"

Tom Waits is a ****ing genius. I've only recently gotten into him, but I'm glad I did.

Yeah, I just have this nagging "proper-ness" I guess about listening to whole album whenever I put it in. And it's taking some effort to stay attentive through the unfathomably depressing sounding tunes on there. "..Traubert's Blues" is the kind of song I have to read the lyrics while it plays or I just tune out. Then "Step Right Up" gets my attention a little more. And then it slows down again. I think I just need some more time with it.

What did you think of the songs I listed? Have you heard them? There isn't much positive about SC, given the reason he ran off the Europe to write it.

I really love Tom Waits. I think this is an uncommon opinion, but my favorite of the albums I've heard so far is Blood Money. There are some really great tracks on that.

"Alice" is an amazing song, but I think a lot of tracks after that on the album go a bit downhill.

I haven't gotten into Tom Waits but I've heard so many good things. Where should I start?

I accidentally posted this in Avant-Garde/Experimental earlier today, and was directed here. For whatever reason, I didn't find this thread in my search.

"Wondering how the general populace feels about this man?

I heard Nighthawks at the Diner first, and loved it. Couldn't get enough of it. Now I'm hearing Rain Dogs for the first time, and it's good for a first listen, but needs to grow.

I'm assuming - partially based on the size of his catalogue - that people may like some of his material and hate others.

I've watched every interview I could get my hands on and watched a bunch of live performances to try and get a feel for him, and he strikes me as brilliant, so I feel he deserves an attentive and thorough chance."

All that was before reading every single post in this thread. I think I was right in my instinct that this guy will continue to grow on me, because as of now I love him, and there were some very insightful replies here over the past 5 years/31 pages.

I think I'll give Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night a shot next, as those are the only other two I've got for now. After those, I may look into the more daunting Bone Machine, etc.

I'm very open-minded, and am excited to hear these albums that have been warned against as being too overwhelming for the first-time listener. I can't wait!
