Are those the only ones you have heard, then? With Teeth is great, but I think the record everyone generally agrees you should start with is the Downward Spiral. Also, the Broken EP is pretty amazing.

The Fragile is good too, it is just a little too much to absorb on your first run with NIN.

Yeah, it certainly was a big bite to start off with... for a while it did actually overwhelm me as a listener, but with time and familarity I definitely came to love it.

I thought of a similar comment, but really, it might not be so bad starting with these. In general, I tend to like what I hear first best. So he'll take a liking for these, and then be completely blown away when he checks out the earlier stuff. I would think, anyway.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

You are probably right...I did love With Teeth, so I'm sure someone who had never heard them would love it as well. It amazes me how Trent has really upped his speed in writing music. He used to pull Tool and only release albums every 5 or more years. Now I can hardly keep up.

Yeah but I do think the quality has gone down. I like With Teeth and Year Zero, even Ghosts and The Slip. They just all have some weak tracks and don't compare to The Downward Spiral, Broken, and Pretty Hate Machine for me. Fragile's kind of a weird one that has grown on me over the years but I don't know where to place as far as ranking. It's too long for me to really love it, but it's otherwise good stuff. I also tend to rag on his later material (after Fragile) for his vocal style changing but really it's not all that different from Pretty Hate Machine. I think I tend to think that way because Broken is my favorite and that one is really aggressive in his vocal delivery. And it's been ages since I've listened to PHM so I tend to forget the way he sang there.

I actually feel exactly the same way as you. Even about the Fragile...I feel like I should like it and I always remember liking it to an extent...but I can never quite verbalize exactly how I feel about it.

But Ghosts kicked ass to me. I love ambient stuff to begin with, and I was really unsure if he could pull it off, but he nailed it. It pretty much solidified my opinion of Trent as an incredibly talented musician. Now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't have been worried since I played Quake back in the day and the music in that was creepy as ****.

I still haven't listened to the Quake soundtrack he did. I heard it's killer. I agree that Ghosts is really good, and I really should play it more. There are some really good moments it's just too bad that they're not more developed. I think that is just about everyone's complaint about it.
