Ralph Stanley:
In this song, I liked the touch of black humour when RS sings,"Oh Death, please consider my age; Please don´t take me at this stage" . Overall though, "Oh Death" succeeds too well in its dirge-like purpose; too sluggish, too depressing for me.

Son House:
Something about this song reminded me of good old Beefheart; maybe it was the occasional "Hoooo" interjections, or the way the claps punctuate the recital like the on/off clicks of Beefheart´s tape deck. Either way, this is the one that wins my vote.

O death was, as Lisna has said, awfully depressing and I found it boring beyond belief. I actually like Son House, but didn't like this particular song.

There's nothing wrong with my taste: I hate your music, don't I?

Interesting you should mention the Beefheart connection, Lisanholic -- I can definitely hear it in Son House's "Grinnin'" and as a matter of fact, can hear it as well in Ralph Stanley's "O Death". (Note: witness R. Stanley's/The Bootleggers' cover of "Sure 'Nuff 'N' Yes" on the Lawless soundtrack.) These two are actually close for me, but I'm selecting Son House for the playful handclaps which are a good foil to the paranoid lyrics.

On the song Tarotplane, Beefheart references the track pretty directly. He repeats a good friend is hard to find several times on that one.

I think that Mirror Man is pretty underrated amongst psych and Beef fans.

Forgot about "Tarotplane" referencing that line. I have Mirror Man Sessions but haven't listened to it in a long time - very tired today, so I probably should listen to "Moody Liz (Take 8)".

ribbons, Frownland : thanks for passing on those connections and references. How well informed you both are ! I will be checking up on that cover version of Sure 'Nuff and may revisit Tarotplane too.

( For my ignorant self, Ralph Stanley was a completely new name, and I´d forgotten that "good friend" line in Tarotplane. My excuse for the latter is that I probably haven´t played that album for about thirty years. In fact, at that time I found it a bit disappointing; it didn´t have the punch and power of Strictly Personal, and the repetitive lyrics were a let down after hearing (on TMR) what the Beef would later become capable of. Still, if it gets Frownland´s seal of approval, I´d better give it another chance! )
