Default Goofle's Top 10 Albums From (most) Years: 1963-2017

The first year in which I have heard close to 10 albums from is 1965, so I will start there, but here's my Top 5 from the previous two years:

1963

5. The Beatles - Please Please Me
4. The Beatles - With The Beatles
3. Thelonious Monk - Criss-Cross
2. The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach - The Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach
1. Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

1964

5. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
4. The Beatles - Beatles for Sale
3. The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones
2. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
1. Jacques Brel - Enregistrement public

1965

8. The Beatles - Help!
7. The Zombies - The Zombies
6. The Beatles - Rubber Soul
5. Grant Green - Idle Moments
4. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
3. Albert Ayler Quartet - Vibrations
2. Albert Ayler Trio - Spiritual Unity
1. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

I don't particularly care for the latter Beatles album on this list, but since I was scraping around for list fillers, it made the cut. However, I either really like, or love the rest of these albums. The Jazz albums are up there with some of my favourite of all time, with #1 and #2 being nailed on classics in my opinion. Highway 61 is comfortably my favourite Dylan record, and the only one I would listen to out of choice, as opposed to a binge.

Overall, this is just an okay year for me. I am certain there's plenty of albums I have not had the pleasure of listening to as of right now, but this is the best I have so far.

Righty-O! It'll be fun comparing lists as we go along. I've skimmed your Top 5 of each year list on RYM before and we do have a decent amount of common ground already. Seeing this, our major differentiator here is that I'm not a jazz fan. I may acquire a taste for it later in life, but I haven't yet.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

1966

10. The Rolling Stones - Aftermath
9. John Mayall With Eric Clapton - Blues Breakers
8. Godz - Contact High With the Godz
7. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
6. The Beatles - Revolver
5. John Coltrane & Don Cherry - The Avant-Garde
4. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
3. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Put a Spell on You [EP]
2. The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators
1. The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out!

This is by no means an amazing year for me, but I dig pretty much every album on this list, save for the last two. My second favourite Dylan album, the awesome jazzy exploits of Coltrane and Cherry, THAT SJH song and undisputed classics from the Beach Boys and The Beatles. But lets be real here, nothing is going to top Freak Out!. I think this was probably my introduction to Frank Zappa, and I can't over-state how important a moment that was in my musical history. Phenomenal stuff.

1967

10. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Safe as Milk
9. The Beach Boys - Wild Honey
8. The Red Crayola With the Familiar Ugly - The Parable of Arable Land
7. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
6. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
5. Love - Forever Changes
4. The Doors - The Doors
3. Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen
2. The Peter Brötzmann Trio - For Adolphe Sax
1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced

Now this is the year where shit really starts to heat up. I could probably make an argument for any of the top seven being my favourite from 1967 in fact. But lets be real real here, Jimi and the boys killed it. Having said that, I have listened to The Doors probably three times as much as any album on this list, and it would definitely be the most significant for me in terms of my musical journey. Favourite Beatles and Beach Boys albums too. Overall, a fantastic year for me.

1967 has about 3 possible #1's haha. Love the list. Got to hear Freak Out!, waiting for a vinyl copy though.

1968

10. Red Krayola - God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It
9. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Creedence Clearwater Revival
8. Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes
7. Dr. John, The Night Tripper - Gris-Gris
6. Silver Apples - Silver Apples
5. The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
4. The Kinks - The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society
3. The Peter Brötzmann Octet - Machine Gun
2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
1. Silver Apples - Contact

Another fantastic year, filled with albums I adore. Now, the first Silver Apples record seems to be the most revered overall, but I just preferred Contact a whole lot more personally. Jimi continues to put out classics (and my favourite of his actually), Brötzmann kills it and that Zombies album is simply a classic. All of the other albums are pretty damn good too.

ERROR: I accidentally placed the C.A. Quintet (seen below) album in here initially.

1969

10. Leonard Cohen - Songs From a Room
9. Can - Monster Movie
8. Sun Ra and His Astro Infinity Arkestra - Atlantis
7. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
6. Wolfgang Dauner Quintet - The Oimels
5. The Kinks - Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire
4. Scott Walker - Scott 4
3. C.A. Quintet - Trip Thru Hell
2. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground
1. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica

And the award for most surprising album listed as #1 goes to... somebody else I suppose! Of course it's my #1, for crying out loud. Also including my favourite TVU and Scott Walker albums. Zappa, Wolfgang and Sun Ra holding it down. Fantastic year again, and one I really need to delve into a little more.

Also, one thing I have to atone for, in my 1968 list I put the C.A. Quintet album in. I am going to assume this came about because of a copy and paste error. Therefore I am replacing it with God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It by the Red Krayola. My comments in that list still stand, vastly under appreciated release.

I love Captain Beefheart's Safe as Milk but I could never get through Trout Mask Replica. I've tried twice, and I'm sure I will try again in the future, as it's highly regarded but I just don't get it.

1970

10. Amon Düül II - Yeti
9. クニ河内と彼のともだち [Kuni Kawachi & Friends] - Kirikyogen
8. Wolfgang Dauner - Output
7. Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
6. Soft Machine - Third
5. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
4. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
3. Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band - Lick My Decals Off, Baby
2. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
1. Demon Fuzz - Afreaka!

This really isn't the best year for me. There's some great stuff in here, especially the top two. But before compiling this list, for some reason I expected there to be more competition for places. That said, every album I have here is at least very good. There's not been much of a stylistic shift over the past few years either, and that trend continues for a little while.
