Hmm, the singing in "Hot Topic" by Le Tigre sounded so childlike and melodic to me that I thought the song could be considered soul, if it weren't for the drum pattern and a bit of distorted guitar. Their singing didn't seem to have much edge and made the song sound very tame...although of course the topic is good!

I'll try listening to some more of their stuff. Maybe there's something harsher. I probably just prefer a punk sound to electroclash.

Thank you for mentioning electroclash, by the way. I'd never heard of that genre before, Oh Wise and Knowledgable Tumor.

The female crust bands > Riot Grrl

IMO Vi Subversa of Poison Girls was a much better feminist figure, as she was a housewife/mother and knew of both sides, rather than Kathleen Hanna spouting off her bull****

The voice is one of the key reasons I like Slant 6. They were just an unpretentious band who used their talents well .. and liked punk rock

I disagree. Maybe your point about Poison Girls is a good one but I wouldn't know because I never heard of them until now.

But I definitely knew about Bikini Kill and had respect for them. As for Riot Grrl - I dunno. The girls I knew at the time didn't need that kind of thing to feel 'empowered' but I bet a lot of girls all over the place had never even thought about standing up against viral small-town-style sexism until they heard Bikini Kill et al

Somehow...probably due to focusing on college studies...I managed to miss the whole Riot Grrrl feminist punk movement in the 1990s. I didn't even know it existed until...today!

Paloma, what about the Riot Grrrl movement did you think was ****ty? I actually don't know anything about it other than the opinions you and Engine gave and what I've read on Wikipedia. I think it is interesting that "Riot grrrls took a growling double or triple r, placing it in the word girl, as a way to take back the derogatory use of the term."

I like when music connects with social movements and history rather than just being pure entertainment, so now I'm more curious about all the bands that considered themselves part of the Riot Grrrl movement.

Oh jesus. Fighting over which feminist movement is better is like fighting over which sect of Christianity is better. They both had a message with a slightly different twist. I don't give a s*** who is "better" but I know that not all women have the same experiences so some related to one or the other. I related to the riot girl movement.

Rriot Grrl, your username and posts above make me think you'll know the answer to this...

Were there just two main feminist punk music movements...the "female crust punk" bands and the "Riot Grrl" movement? How do you feel the two movements' song messages differed? I haven't heard enough of their music to know yet. And what made you relate to the riot grrl movement more than the crust movement?

I agree with the idea of not wanting to discourage any band because of its particular feminist political message, partly for the reason you mention!
