After one decent album, and then a string of letdowns one after another, I have come to accept that any records released by Nickelback will be poor, repetitive, and annoying. This will be the last time I ever trick myself into buying a Nickelback album, and it’s almost somber of me to say that because Nickelback was one of four bands I pretty much grew up with. The Beatles, 3 Doors Down, Creed, and Nickelback. Anytime I would ever be in the back of either my mom’s, or dad’s car, one of those four bands would be in the stereo. Overtime however, I realized that I didn’t really like Nickelback. Sure some songs were entertaining, but as a whole album, well, I’ll be nice, and say that it wasn’t very rewarding to listen to a whole Nickelback album. So here I am, reviewing another one of their records, but how did I do this to myself? Well, at first I had no intention of purchasing “All The Right Reasons” because of the boring, acoustic single, Photograph. It’s not necessarily bad, but the last couple albums before had at least entertaining singles. Later on, I heard the second single, Animals on Music Choice Rock. That further didn’t help the case of me buying the new record because it is another standard Nickelback single, but not even catchy.

Then I found out that one song on “All The Right Reasons” was a tribute to Dimebag Darrel, and even featured a solo from him being used with permission by Dimebag’s wife. That piqued my interest, but only to a slight extent. So I bought Side of a Bullet off of iTunes, and it proved a rewarding listen indeed. The opening riff was somewhat a combination of a distorted Nickelback/Pantera guitar riff. The solo was fairly good too, and fit well. All of it was entertaining, but what really caught my attention were the powerful lyrics. “Uncle Sam taught him to shoot maybe a little too well. Finger on the trigger. Loaded bullet. He hit the stage so full of rage, and let the whole world know it. Six feet away, they heard him say, “Oh God, don’t let him pull it! Please God don’t let him pull it!” How could you put us through it? His brother watched you do it! How could you take his life away? How could you be so full of hate? And when I heard you let him die, and made the world all wonder why I sat at home, and on my own I cried alone, and scratched your name on the side of a bullet.”

With that I decided to finally buy, “All The Right Reasons”. Well, I should have known better. In a previous review, I stated that Nickelback shouldn’t ever attempt to write acoustic songs because it never works. Then why I wonder are there in five songs with the use of an acoustic guitar in them? To be blunt, it doesn’t work at all. They’re boring, and repetitive, which is basically the same thing as the rest of the album, but worse. Rockstar is one of the acoustic songs, and is the closer to the album as well. Plus, it’s about the worst song of the record. It’s not the music, but the lyrics that make it so bad. “I’m gonna sing those songs that offend the censors. Gonna pop my pills from a pez dispenser. When they ask me why I drink all day I’ll say because I can. I’ll get washed up singers writing all my songs. Lip sync ‘em every night so I don’t get ‘em wrong. Then listen to the fans tell me how damn good I am. I’m gonna trade this life for fortune and fame. I’d even cut my hair, and change my name. Cause we all just wanna be big rock stars.” Well, at least they tried to add variety, but they do it rather pitifully, and I almost felt like laughing out loud when I heard, Someone That You’re With. I don’t know what they were thinking with that opening guitar part, but I guess they wanted to get their folksy side out. Rather pathetic really. It’s a standard, potential, Nickelback single, but with a folksy guitar-opening riff, that comes back a few more times.

It’s really sad that “All The Right Reasons” only has one above average song on it, and the rest are poor. I’ll grant the fact that the songs don’t sound the same as they do on other Nickelback albums, but they are all still boring, and uninspired, save Side of a Bullet. “All The Right Reasons” does one good thing at least, which is teaching me to never buy a Nickelback album again.

2/5 Poor

One time on the radio they played two of their songs at the same time, one on the left speaker and one on the left. Just plain mind blowing how similar they were.

bastards.

Merkaba 04-26-2006 05:22 PM

Good reveiw but a piss poor band.

Saw an interveiw with them the other night, awfully bland scenarios they bring into the studio. Apparently one of the songs off this album took them 5 weeks to get sorted, I'd love to know which one had such effort put into it.

If you buy this album you will want more than a nickel back. :D

Really well written review and a great example of how reviews should be. Great reviews are nice, but the ones that slam an album are probably most beneficial.

I'd like to say thanks to kripes who, by this well thought out peice has shown himself to be a new member of note.

I don't care for their stuff but I do think they get alot more flack than they should. Oh well.

Again, great review.

Kripes 05-01-2006 08:09 PM

Why, thank you, RainDog. Means much. :)

I'll put more reviews up later too. :thumb:

No love lost, I feel the review was too personal. If you would like a tip, Kripes; try to stray away from the first person. But otherwise, good work. I will write an album review shortly so you can take shots at me too if you like. :P

Kripes 05-06-2006 08:32 AM

Some of my reviews are first person and some aren't. I just write how I feel at times.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-17-2006 11:11 PM

Horrid. This is one of my top most hated bands. When I went to the Stones concert Nicklecrap performed before hand. I needed ear plugs Chad sung so harshly, it was one power ballad after another. Thumbs down.

Regardless of corn ^ that is still very very funny.

explosions-in-my-pants 05-17-2006 11:59 PM

I find on there new album that some songs actually had me fooled into thinking i was listening to one of there older songs.. Like i started to song to it then realizing i wasn't singing the right lyrics.. but they were very much alike, in sound and writing.. I found this to be strange.. Many bands are 'repetitive, and annoying' but this band just should leave it.. they haven't been out for that long and there already pulling a bushx over us. They just sound like the first album over and over.. only less good.. and to me honestly i never liked them.

anyways from what i heard in videos.. and radio play from this album i can without a doubt say that this album sucks completely.

MURDER JUNKIE 05-18-2006 12:15 AM

This album appeals to people who religiously listen to John Cougar and to a lesser extent Bruce Springsteen

Doc.DGAF 05-18-2006 07:44 AM

I wouldn't listen to it constantly, but if I'm drunk enough I'm up for it. Otherwise, the monotonous and unchanging pace and rhythm of it burns out pretty quick. On a 1-10, Imma say 3.

I like Nickelback and the cd. I think Daniel Adair added a lot with his drumming.

fidelityfiend 06-02-2006 10:55 AM

I can't help but wonder seeing as to how you "grew up" listening to Creed, Nickelback and 3 Doors Down - how old are you? 8?
Not trying to slam you but good lord - how about expanding your horizons a little? Sounds like maybe you have with the Pantera tilt but you couldn't pick 3 worse bands to be influenced by if you had to. Did your Dad have a mullet?
Still does? That explains it.

stakeraiser 06-15-2006 03:22 PM

best band EVA!!!!

oh wait, nevermind, thats Foghat

SLOW RIDE!! TAKE IT EASY!!!

one_more_atrocity 06-15-2006 04:56 PM

i dont mind them, but as to actually going out and spending my money on their stuff... err no.

Dude, I'm 16. When I say grew up I mean when I started listening to music that's what my tastes started out at. My 'horizons' are 'broadened'. I listen to a variety of music, but everyone starts somewhere. And no, my dad never has had a mullet.

EDGE 07-02-2006 12:34 AM

Terrible.

jessica x3 07-13-2006 12:05 PM

Twistershift 07-13-2006 10:59 PM

Zach 09-25-2006 05:18 AM

I gave it Excellent

fattyboomboom21 10-18-2006 10:36 AM

though the opener to the album is intense...the radio hits are all the same.

jemanji 11-20-2006 08:53 AM

Ew.

TheBig3 11-22-2006 09:52 AM

I kinda like rock star even though its evidently a country song.

MHDTV 08-02-2007 09:30 PM

It's catchy...Who said it was Classic/Flawless? Want to explain your reasoning on the excellent rating Zach.

Frances 08-02-2007 09:32 PM

I voted Poor, There was no worse option.

MHDTV 08-02-2007 09:34 PM

I personally like Nickelback alot. Mainly because of Curb and Silver Side up, and the state. Yes they have changed, but i think thats because of the position there in. They are now a big mainstream rock band, and there songs reflect that. They are talking about dealing with the ridiculous amount of fame they get. For example the songs rockstar, next contestant.

Rockstar
I'm gonna dress my ass
With the latest fashion
Get a front door key to the Playboy mansion
[Rockstar lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Gonna date a centerfold that loves to
Blow my money for me
(So how you gonna do it?)

I'm gonna trade this life
For fortune and fame
I'd even cut my hair
And change my name

-This is just about how people in there position are offered this, and alot take it.

_-----------------

For those that say they have sold out i think that is completely wrong. There music style changes like any other band progressing in the music industry. There songs are about things that apply to them now that threre one of the biggest names in music...can u blame them for it?

And for those who say all there songs sound the same, thats just because you obviously havnt listened to them much. With the exception of (The long road, which was not there best album) there songs are VERY different. Take the song animals and compare it to savin me. completely different. The songs they have are no more similar than most other bands. ANothing from Silver side Up sounds like the same song twice, and certanly nothing from the State.

I think people jump on the bandwagon of making fun of nickelback for this, and dont listen to them with an open mind. Although if you actually dont like them, thats up to you.

ProggyMan 10-07-2007 01:23 PM

Personally I think everything by them is mediocre except for Silver Side Up, which was pretty good.

Yea, thats fine. Im just talking about the people who have barely listened to them then go off blabing about how everything sounds the same and they sold out, when they actually dont have the slightest clue about the band.
