i think this is a recipe for disaster. isn't one of the reasons people are chosen as mods that they're responsible and sensible members of the community? having a courtroom style event is just going to spread more drama and attention to some brat's BS across the site. i could understand getting member input if it's something specific like 2-3 users constantly targeted by a specific troll, but to just open it up is a mess. what's the point of having worthwhile mods in this case aside from being a breathing spam filters?

It's a ****ing internet forum, for ****s sake, if you don't like the way it's run then leave. Also, I definitely don't think the community of MB should be involved in the decision to ban a member. Our mods do their jobs and they do them well; none of my complaints are directed toward them.

YES!

See, this is a thread where the problem was asked to be addressed. So I'm trying to address it. Dude wants to know if there are any problems with the website because of moderation or just problems with moderation on a whole. I feel like, this is the internet. Place is free range as ****. So this place where you receive "infractions" for retarded stuff just seems like a kid's forum. It's like taking a gold star away. And sometimes there are posts that are deleted that don't quite deserve it. It's unnecessary, and alienates MB's members.

Just suggestions.

The reason I made this thread was to see if there is malcontent with us moderators or the way we moderate members beyond what's expected. There will always be some, we're just people and members in general don't like being moderated etc.

However, people seem generally pleased and there doesn't seem to be as much drama concerning this as I first thought. Still, we're here for the site which includes you guys so feel free to come with more suggestions if there's something on your mind.

In my experience, communities which are not moderated becomes a playground for trolls and hostile users who harass and discourage new users from joining up - unless they too are part of that tiny minority which thrive in such communities. Over time, community becomes isolated and dies a slow death as it loses members more quickly than it gains them. Eventually, you have a community consisting only of a few loyal hanger-ons complaining about what the site was like before it turned to ****.

I've been part of such communities before so I firmly believe moderation is needed.

I still don't know what an infraction is. I just ban people.

^ This.

Personally I just use infractions as written warnings, and anyone who's stupid enough not to heed it's gonna get banned long before he/she/it gets 10 of them.

I explained it in this post, although I guess Bulldog read it since he knows the magic number. :D

10 points equals a ban. If those points are set to never expire, it's basically a permban. The good thing about using infractions/warnings is that they all show up on the users infractions tab (only visible to mods). If infractions were always used to give out warnings and bans, checking up on a person's entire moderation history would be easy.

For this reason, I'm very much for the infractions being used - even if we don't use them exactly like the system is meant to work.

I'm just a little too subversive to be passing out write-ups. I think a 3 day ban gets the point across better and also serves to quench my thirst for power and authority.

Yes, I don't really hand out many infractions these days. I started out pretty aggressive and wrote a damn lot of PMs. I think the easiest way to infract/warn someone using that system is to just quote the post where they did wrong and rather than comment it, just post a link to the rules.

I was joking of course (sorta)
