I'm not trying to be condescending, but I'm kind of being forced to I feel like. In a forum with tens of thousands of user, I don't see the necessity to mod someone who has only been here a few months.

Tens of thousands of registered users is not the same thing as tens of thousands of active users. There are probably only a couple dozen active users who are logged in often enough to be mods. Then the number goes down a bit when you're looking for people who aren't too hot-headed. Then it goes down even further when you consider logistics like trying to find people who tend to be logged in during times of day when we don't have much mod coverage. Then, from that diminishing pool of candidates, you have to find people who actually want to be mods, and believe me I've seen quite a few people turn down offers. In the end you're left with only a handful of potential mods so I think your assumption that there are people beating down the door for the job is pretty far off base.

I don't see the need for secrecy. If someone gets banned for a specific post, that post is there for the world to see (until a pissed off moderator deletes it). It is public, not private. There's no need to tip-toe around it.

So what if he posts child porn? Should we leave it?

Offending posts are usually deleted because we don't want to encourage that kind of behavior, so the posts aren't really even "public".

For the record, I completely disagree with making information regarding punitive action public.

Dirty, you stated in your video (an entertaining watch, by the way :D ) that you feel sometimes the MB mods are too harsh on new members. To quote you "not everybody has been on a forum for 10 fuckin years." People will make mistakes and they will act stupidly and they WILL be banned or infracted for it. Many times this is due to their inexperience with how to behave on a forum, sometimes it's just because they're a prick, but either way - we want to help reform people so that they can become valued members, not humiliate them just so you lot can satisfy your curiosity. Even if they've broken the rules, they have the right to privacy - whether you like it or not.

Get the motherfuck over it.

I don't think it happens a lot, but I think mods and members alike both forget what it was like to sign up and post on a forum for the first time with no prior knowledge on how to form posts or behave or anything. Not often, but I've seen smartass comments made on occasion when a n00b posts something dumb or asks something stupid. My point was that it;s easy to forget after years of posting on forums that 'not everyone has posted on a forum for 10 ****ing years." Again I will try to stress right now that i'm not saying this happens the majority of the time or even a lot, and of course everyone is human and says smartass stuff sometimes to stupid comments, but the mods should realize more than anyone how to handle a n00b in my opinion.

And I am talking separately about n00bs and 'regulars' when I'm talking about bans. Because nobody knows the n00bs or cares why someone with 3 posts was given the hammer. I don't think more than like 5% of people would be offended if the reason for their ban was given. Like I said in my video, jesus christ it's a public forum, what's the huge issue here?? I feel like it could be the simplest thing in the world to post a few lines in a thread on why someone was banned and not be vague like it needs to be the secret of the century. Maybe not many others share my feeling about airing out why someone was banned, but i personally wouldn't be the slightest bit offended and i hope a mod tells every member exactly why i was banned. I don't see how it's humiliating or insulting to do so. And also I think it's fine for regular members to question why someone was banned if it appears to be for a bogus reason.

Not at all, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that if someone gets banned for posting child porn, it should be public knowledge that they were banned for posting child porn (it creeps me out to even type those two words together). If someone is willing to publicly post something that is worthy of a ban, they obviously don't care about the privacy of the banworthy content, as they posted it for everyone to see. Those are the simplest terms it can be put in.

Dirty 05-24-2011 09:24 PM

Also Jans I know you are open about it and many mods have been friendly and told me why someone was banned but usually through PM. I appreciate that, i just think it would be incredibly simple to just post exactly why they were banned. Obviously the mods have a much bigger issue with privacy towards public message board posts than I do and that's where we likely differ the most

Okay, that's a reasonable suggestion. I'd like add my own two cents though. Being welcoming and helpful to new members is something that can be done by anyone, not just mods. If you see a new person inadvertently doing something wrong, you can point it out to them just as easily as we can. So please do so.

Heh.... personaly guys I just take it for what it is...a music forum. However the lounge has some entertaining things..lol...very funny people. Lately there hasnt been a day go by that I havent laughed hysterically at the back and forth of some. I think the best are the ones that are really bothered by someone and do their best to try to project their personal pain back at somebody. Which usually turns out to be f*cking hilarious. I try not to get to caught up in it but I cant help but laugh. Im not talkin about D.J or Dirty just for the record. I dont have any complaints about the site people who moderate it or the members themselves. Everyone including the mods are pretty comical and good for some intense laughter on a day to day basis even when some are trying to be dicks. Along with discussing and sharing ideas and recommendations on music. I dont think you could ask for a better site to be a part of, and if I was banned tomorow id be forever greatful for my time I was fortunate enough to spend here on MB. Life in general shouldnt be taken so seriously all the time cause your missing out on to many laughs. Maybe something that may help out some of you is to get this visual for some of the ones who you feel are insulting you...................................

Point is just try an lighten up a little....look how funny it can be when someone is serious.

I don't see why non-mods shouldn't see actually why someone was banned. The details are so vague, I'd like to know what post they actually made or a jist of what they said. 'Inappropriate comments' could include so many things, it'd take any questioning out of the equation to be a little more specific and say somethng like 'Dirty insulted conan for having a small cock' or whatever the case was. Again, I know it sounds like I'm making it a big deal but im not trying to, just speaking my thoughts.

also on the original post, i doubt anyone will really listen to the first part about how to effectively approach a mod or whatever, but nonetheless is was a good post and i liked the insight to the mod cave. I don't think you really have to play the game or whatever to become a mod, but it'd be easy to do for anyone, but im not sure why anyone would want to do that in the first place.

You haven't listened to a word Big3 or anyone else has said. It's not everyones business to know every detail of why someone was banned/infracted. This is CLEARLY because if we say this person broke the rules then they DID. We shouldn't have to give a million details every time someone is banned, because at the end of the day they've most likely been given multiple chances to improve their behaviour and have ****ed up.
