I know it would be a bit too much if this was done for every avvy change on the site (I couldn't do that anyway), but if the option was open for people who had a name change, do you think that this would make things unnecessarily complicated or require a new thread?

Just tracking down the avatars after they're changed would be a challenge in itself.

Out of interest, does anybody think that this level of curiosity about users' previous avatars is mind-bogglingly obsessive behavior that should be relentlessly shunned?

Haha, yeah I guess the who's who of names is kinda interesting: Sonance, Veridical Fiction, Goofy11, matious, TheBigTreeKilledMyDog, etc. but ... avatars? Many people change those every few weeks. I can't think of a less important digital archive considering the work that would be needed to put into one.

Agreed. That would be a bit pointless even for me. I too noticed how much interest there seems to be about previous avvies, but you're probably right that we shouldn't really take too much notice of it. The reason I suggested it was that I've read a lot of posts saying something to the extent of "I only remeber people by their avatars". But that I suppose is their problem and I won't bring it up again.
Shall I stick to just cataloging name changes?
