Free spell check! (Plus grammar check, punctuation check...)

Bein as how im so gud with de english langwich, I taught I'd offer dis servise to any hoo want it...

Seriously though (serious face on) this may only interest a very small percentage of members, but let me put it out there anyway. Most of us are fine with regard to how we spell, use grammar and so on in our posts, but there are those who could perhaps benefit from a little help with their writing. It's no shame to admit you're not the world's best writer (unlike me!)

and could do with a little help.

So for anyone who wants it, here I am. Send me your posts and I'll check the spelling, grammar, punctuation and anything else that needs to be checked, and send them back to you corrected, so that when they're uploaded you can be reasonably sure there are no errors in them, and that they read well.

I won't expect a flood of replies, but anyone who wants to take advantage of this offer don't be afraid to post here. You can either post your full entry here, or a link to it, or just post that you want to send something and you can email it to me if you want. I don't mind what way you prefer to do it.

So there it is, for what it's worth. Any takers?

Nice initiative, but I wouldn't need it even if I do have the occasional error simply because spell checking is an integrated feature of my Chrome internet browser.

I don't think it helps with punctuation so perhaps that's an area where your expertise could be more useful in general.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but some people don't even like using a spell checker, plus 99% of them are setup for "American English", so that a word like "realise" will get you the advice "you should change to realize". That always bugged the hell out of me!

I know you can change it in the settings, but I find few people do this. Also, as I say, it's often something just missed, like if someone is in a hurry and types the wrong word, and remember, a spell checker will not realise (or realize!)

that when you wrote "not" you meant "now", as both are valid words and properly spelled. Sometimes it takes a human eye... wonder where I can get a pair of those?

Anyway, I'm not expecting to be inundated with requests, just letting people know the service is here if they need it.

I use firefox, so there's a spell-check included in my browser. It's awesome. You should look into add-ons.

If I'm being honest, we're a pretty well read community. I don't have a problem communicating with anyone here and I see grammatical errors like they were clues in the Da Vinci Code.

It's the same with chrome without add-ons needed. It checks spelling and marks errors for you as you type out your post.

I thought about switching to Chrome, but I get so irritable when something I'm used to changes around that I've been putting it off.

You don't even need spell check add-ons in Firefox. I don't have one and words that are underlined in red are the ones that FF thinks are not spelt correctly. The only add-on I have for Firefox is Ad-Block Plus, which I don't think is available in Chrome, IE, or Safari.

Alternatively, if you're typing a lengthy post and you don't have the option of spell check in your browser, I suggest typing it out in Word or whatever text formatting program you like to use and seeing the proper spellings it suggests. Those programs don't check for proper grammar all of the time though, so that's where Trollheart would come in if he wants to proofread your post. Send it to him however, and then when it's ready, just copy and paste it into the post reply box. Voila!

What irritates me about my Firefox spell check is that it's all American spelling, so I always have loads of red lines.

Exactly one of the points I made. It's not confined to browsers either; most word processors are pre-set to "American English", where the letter Z usually replaces the letter S, and I is used more than Y (Tyre/tire) and so on.

English in the UK is absolutely inundated with American spellings. I was shocked when I did my masters several years ago, because when I used to use the spell check, I was shocked at how many times I had used the American spelling on some words, even today I have to make a conscious effort of using actual English spelling.
