(not sure if that's a word but you know what I mean).

When you call something a condition you've pretty much immediately implied there's a problem. Happiness is not a condition. Laziness is not a condition. Paralysis is a condition, so is measles. I think the definition of condition to include straight people (in an attempt to perhaps justify characterising people who are trans as having a condition) is disingenuous at best, maybe what you people call a strawman? Never quite understood that word really. But certainly the sort of thing that makes it look like an attempt at backtracking and retro-justification.

Just how I see it, but what do I know?

yeah it is a loaded term but also it's tricky to me... Like being born a midget might also be a condition. There are obvious medical issues associated. Yet it would be in poor taste to say there's something "wrong" with being one... It's just abnormal

I'm not saying it's not a major part. I'm distinguishing between whether it's birth sex that is being treated or trans identity. That's an important difference

Why would you need to "treat" someone's birth sex though? Doesn't that imply there's something "wrong" with it?

The thing around Chapelle's friend and the trans community's interactions there was what drove my original comment because there's an irony in their lack of empathy over a trans comedian's experiences over Twitter when they already know how hard it is.

In a lot of cases they want to transition but the circumstances just aren't ideal to make the jump. It's not a bad thing to do it or not do it, but you already agree with that.

the punchline of the joke is basically at their expense though bro be real about it

I could say the same joke about people with down syndrome and it would have the same connotation

Not at all. The final solution is to create therapies where you can either revert back to your birth sex with no side effects or surgeries or shift to a different sex (or orientation even) of your choice with no side effects or medication / surgery. All of that requires an understanding of genetics that we don't have right now, but that's where things are going.

Your sexual orientation is a condition (the spectrum), as is your biological sex. People form identities based on their attachments to the conditions of their existence and environmental factors.

omg yes of course, as opposed to there being something wrong with trans identity. That was my point

jwb 10-26-2021 02:53 PM

Imagine if you could transition within the course of 5 mins and then just transition back when you feel like it... Is there anyone here who wouldnt try taking a test drive as the opposite sex?

based on what though? There's nothing wrong with their sex other than the fact that for whatever reason they dont identify with it. So saying there is something wrong with their sex is the same as saying there's something wrong with their trans identity. The problem with their sex is that it doesn't conform to said identity. And the same is true in reverse imo.

Marie Monday 10-26-2021 02:56 PM

no, because trans identity is something that exists regardless of transition. Some trans people opt for treatment of their birth sex, but being trans as such is not something to be treated. In case this is starting to sound nitpicky, it's especially relevant when it's implied that being trans is a state of confusion/identity crisis comparable to religious cultism
