The mantra "Snitches get stitches" doesn't really apply in this situation.

^ Yes, I agree with this; talk of snitching misses the mark. Snitching is when a member of one group (schoolboys, criminals) is betrayed to an enemy group (teachers, police) for some action they had hoped to conceal. In the case of reporting a post, there is no attempt at concealment, and no enemy group - unless that is how we perceive the mods?

Why not say that reporting a post is like this: you are in an office or restaurant and you notice that the toilet is blocked. It's a helpful gesture to report the problem to the janitor and makes life more pleasant for everyone.

Yes, I know it's an imprecise analogy but at least it upgrades the mods from "the enemy" to janitors. (No need to thank me, mods :p:)

Trollheart 08-26-2015 07:19 PM

Sorry man, but that is seriously wrong.
Snitching is when someone from THE SAME group tells on that group. If a cop were to tell on a prisoner, he's certainly not a snitch. If a pupil told on a teacher, not a snitch. Cop giving his buddy away: snitch. Criminal selling out another of his kind: snitch.
That's how it works.
And again sorry, but your toilet analogy is not only imprecise but completely irrelevant. That's like saying don't let mods know if the site isn't working properly, which of course anyone would and will do. Now, if you'd said that if you saw someone cussing someone out in the toilet and THEN went to tell the management, then that would be certainly a lot more accurate, and relevant.

^ I actually wrote "TO an enemy group", not BY, but not to worry - I'm sure we all know what snitching is.

^ Yep, I like that "cussing someone out in the toilet" analogy better than mine. Seems to fit the case more accurately.

I suppose that, regardless of analogies, my position is that snitching and reporting a post are significantly different. Nobody wants to be a snitch and equating it to someone who reports a post is undermining a fórum function that serves a purpose. As a courtesy, it would be polite to announce in the thread, at the time, that you're reporting a post, so that (in the best of cases) a dialogue can ensue, but I think there is still a case for reporting posts, because it takes a mod to quickly delete something that's offensive.

Why reporting can help MB:

As Roxy suggests, there are some posters who might appreciate being defended by an alerted mod, rather than having to fight it out for themselves, perhaps with a well-established and popular member.

This is a public forum, which can be viewed by music enthusiasts as well as by children and grandmothers. Reporting offensive posts is one way to give the place wider appeal, should any of those serious or innocent readers pass through.

(In fact, Trollheart, you have quite a reputation here as being a White Knight, defending the defenseless and taking an honourable stand. If you don't like to report posts, you still do more than your share to maintain the good name of MB. I feel that point should be acknowledged.)

If someone say like, Batturd, goes at someone like Just With Boys, and someone 'squeals' on them, then sure, we as mods know that it's just two rooted people hashing things out. Anyone else that hasn't established themselves will be banned for inflammatory behavior that is clearly unwarranted, and we can't always comb through every thread to look for these instances, and I for ****ing one, appreciate when people let me know it. That is my one and only point. Why is this still a ****ing issue?

I think this analogy works. Someone could have just reported a post that was disgusting like a clogged toilet. I don't understand what's the hoopla over that for?

Sorry man, but that is seriously wrong. A cop really doesn't have opportunity to snitch on a prisoners. Cops apprehend "perps" then they booked, and set up to appear in court, cops usually testify against who the person who perpetrated a crime in a court room, but at time the "perps" are now defendants and they're presume innocent until they are found guilty by a jury of their piers, they are not prisoners until a conviction when they are sent to jail or incarcerated in a prison. Cops generally don't come across prisoners, it's the prison guards who do.

Serious note: I feel we should also acknowledge the diligent work of our mods in acting on any reported posts. I just prefer to deal with it personally if I can, but as Lis and Roxy and others say, some people prefer to avoid confrontation and that's fine. I'm just pointing out there's another way.
