Does anyone know what "Plutonian Nights" is off of? I know it's on multiple albums but, which one should I get?

plutonian nights

1956 so i'd hazard a guess it's big-band swing type stuff, I seriously recommend 1958's Jazz In Silhouette, it's really accessible but there are shades of his 60's insanity appearing as it progresses.

My two consistently enjoyed Ra albums are from this, his New Yoik era (apparently):

1961

1967

Anyone have any recommendations of DVD/video performances that would be good to pick up by him?

Has anyone seen Space is the Place? I've heard that it was pretty entertaining.

If you didn't get a chance to see Sun Ra perform, you should seek out Space is the Place, an early 70s movie starring the jazz master from Saturn himself. Ra floats about in a rocket ship propelled by his music and does battle with the FBI, NASA, and other supernatural bad guys. The movie has a cosmic humor, and like Sun Ra it is at times fascinating, indecipherable, and absurd.
Haha, after reading that I'll go to great lengths to find this.

i can feel myself starting to slip into anoter Ra rut... any of the interested parties watched the film yet? I loved it. Still really want to find the apparently definitive autobiography of the same title for a decent price though, the guy had a fascinating and tragic past. I don't think he was 'insane' per se, especially when nowadays there are so many different categories of mental illness. Clinically depressed for sure

Actually I think his outworldly experience happened, in some form or another.

clarify!
from what i can remember reading, he was always a shy and creative personality and he went through a lot at the hands of bigots and authority figures, apparently he dodged the draft because of his depression.
He's definitely an unheralded figure in Afrocentric music and I don't like people that dismiss his message and music as hippy-dippy mysticism. He was definitely forging his own philosophy from pre-existing ideas..

I was going to peg him as a Nation of Islam Aleister Crowley... but after all his years in relative obscurity you can't detect a trace of corruption (NOI) or artificiality (Crowley)... he's just Sun Ra.
And he's come to free the persecuted and disillusioned with his harmonic isotope transmogrification of the whatchamacallit!
