Another satisfied customer :D

Piss Me Off 01-14-2009 08:58 AM

I don't know how they managed to make Like Herod more intense but they did. Incredible song.

jackhammer 01-14-2009 09:09 AM

Considering they are Radio sessions, it is an incredibly intense album. Glad you are liking it.

dac 01-14-2009 12:11 PM

Mogwai is the best band I've gotten into from MusicBanter, without a doubt.

Sneer 01-14-2009 01:02 PM

Theyre definately in my top 5 post-rock bands, maybe top 3, its a push.

FlapstheVulture 01-14-2009 10:52 PM

Mos Def my favorite post rock band
My mogwai favorites
1. Ratts of the Capitol
2. We're no Here
3. Mogwai Fear Satan
4. I Love you im Going to Blow up Your School
5. Hunted by a Freak

scottsy 01-15-2009 08:27 PM

The whole of Young Team is flawless in my opinion - from the little samples of phone conversations to some of the bridging sections with noises and subtle playing parts - then the whole thing climaxes with "Mogwai Fear Satan", quite possibly the best instrumental I have ever heard, period.

debaserr 01-15-2009 08:36 PM

i kinda think young team is a tad overrated. however it is great.

scottsy 01-15-2009 08:40 PM

I don't find it overrated in any way - it's quite possibly their strongest album ever, although later stuff is great too - but I find that YT is the one album they sound overflowing with great ideas...

My next favorite would have to be Happy Songs for Happy People... that is freaking fantastic disc full of great music.

debaserr 01-15-2009 08:51 PM

what do you guys think about their latest effort? i gave it a few spins and didnt find much to like about it =(

scottsy 01-15-2009 08:55 PM

I am sorry to say I haven't heard it at all - if there is some way you could make that possible for me, I'd be greatly appreciative...

Presently way too broke to consider buying a new Cd for a few months, it's a bummer!

FlapstheVulture 01-16-2009 03:41 AM

The Hawk is Howling is to me there most solid album and best sounding/produced. Not the best. But Second.
1. Batcat
2. the climax of I love You im Goin to Blow
3. Danphe and Local Authority are so ****in sick they remind me of Hunted like a Freak and Friend of the Night

the only song I thought was lacking was The Precipice. Its like they were trudging up the mountain of Mogwai's giant sound and were to tired to reach SATAN

jackhammer 01-16-2009 07:29 AM

I have'nt heard their latest either. This should be rectified.

debaserr 01-16-2009 12:24 PM

i will hook it up gimme a bit

scottsy 01-16-2009 10:18 PM

trace, thanks for the Mogwai hookup, appreciated it muchly! Will make sure I hear it tomorrow when I get on the laptop - I am using a keyboard plugged in toa Nintendo Wii right now post - its a bit of an odd setup, but the laptop usually gets commandeered for all sorts of duties at night, so this is my cosy little space...

sweet_nothing 01-17-2009 08:34 PM

I recently got Happy Songs For Happy People and I thought it was pretty bland. =\

scottsy 01-17-2009 09:29 PM

Happy Songs is a great album for a completely darkened house, with no one else in it...

I played it in this old fishing shack with paper thin walls a few years ago, basically turned the volume up in the living room, went to bed at about 2am, and laid in bed listening to it - it was amazing, haunting and brilliant, and one of my most memorable music listening experiences...

Pity that old shack got torn down and some fancy modern one put in its place, blah...

Mojo 01-18-2009 05:35 PM

The BBC Sessions album is the first one thats instantly clicked with me on the first listen. I'm still trying to really appreciate the rest even though I'm liking them more and more.

jackhammer 01-18-2009 05:41 PM

I can definitely understand when people say they can't get into them or find them boring. It's a certain groove and you dig it or you don't. I'm perfectly happy with music at certain times to have an ambience rather than an attitude so for me Mogwai are damn fine. I think people sometimes look for music to blow everything else out of the water and certain bands are not trying for that. It's music for the moment and that's absolutely fine for me.

Mojo 01-19-2009 03:21 AM

I always felt like i SHOULD like Mogwai a lot more than I actually do though. Same goes for Floyd. I like a lot of psych and a lot of post rock and when I listen to either band I can hear so much talent but it just doesnt work for me. I like both bands by the way, just not as much as I sometimes think I should.

sweet_nothing 01-19-2009 10:25 AM

They just dont do it for me, I find other post rock bands such as Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Rós to be far more interesting.

dac 01-19-2009 10:31 AM

To me EITS come across as very bland compared to Mogwai and such. Sigur Ros is a whole different entity though. Way different than anyone else in the genre.

Sneer 01-19-2009 10:34 AM

I've decided Stanley Kubrick is one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard

Mojo 01-19-2009 11:16 AM

I like EITS more than I do Sigur Ros at this point in time. However, as far as Mogwai goes the BBC sessions album may well be making the rest of the discography a little more accessible for me. Its spectacular.

debaserr 01-19-2009 05:32 PM

sigur ros makes me zzz a lot

sweet_nothing 01-19-2009 08:20 PM

I think I would love Sigur Ros if they didnt have a singer.

scottsy 01-19-2009 09:47 PM

I just LOVE the Hawk is Howling - big thanks to Trace for the download, its absolutely wonderful... especially love the way the album ebbs and flows and rises and falls sonically, it is definitely one of their more intricate, textured albums, and BOY did it grip me in a big way today, in such a way that this one will be CD player favorite for some time to come, methinks...

Might also have to do some Mogwai revisiting...

I should check it out then, I still haven't heard it.

scottsy 01-19-2009 10:51 PM

You should indeed, well worth the time you spend listening to it!

Explain.

sweet_nothing 01-20-2009 08:28 PM

I dont really like his voice.

Alfred 01-20-2009 08:31 PM

I remember liking HSFHP, but I can't remember how any of the songs go.

I need to listen to that again.

dac 01-20-2009 10:57 PM

Thats what my problem was. I could put Mogwai on and think it was good while I was listening to it but then I was instantly forgetting it the moment it finished. There was nothing that stood out to make me remember what I'd just listened to.

Piss Me Off 01-21-2009 06:04 AM

I think that's common with most post-rock, at least with the stuff i've heard. I've always thought with that genre it's more about the mood as a whole album than significant single tracks.

Mogwai go against this rule sometimes though, Hunted By a Freak, Glasgow Mega-Snake and Like Herod stick out like sore thumbs.

Sneer 04-02-2009 04:40 PM

My favourite Mogwai song played to absolute PERFECTION... i need to see this band live
