kay.
so I listened to "skinny fists" yesterday for the first time in which I payed attention.

and I loved it.
I thought the track Static was epic.
sitting dark in my room listening at like 1:00 in the morning,
the middle part gave me goosebumps.

guessing I should listen to more of there stuff,
which cd next?

gotjuice 06-19-2009 11:23 PM

F#A# Infinity would be my recommendation.

I've only got Yanqui U.X.O. and I enjoy it but constant long songs kinda gets draining eventually. But don't know how I didn't know of this band earlier.

FaSho 06-22-2009 08:54 AM

I agree about the length. It's hard for me to listen to a whole album at once sometimes.
Also, I've decided Storms is pretty much their best song.

I just love the ending of Storm...the crescendo winds down into the confusing but semi-creepy convenience store monologue, followed by the saddest, most chilling and haunting as **** piano I've ever heard. I still get chills down my spine whenever I listen to that track, even though I've heard it a lot.

I think Static might nudge Storm out ever so slightly as my favorite, but they're both so good it's hard to pick one.

TheLetheProject 06-27-2009 10:53 PM

I've been listening to a lot of GY!BE lately. To me, it seems like they set up their songs so that there are a few epic parts in a song, then kind of connecting filler parts. I can see why people are turned off by this.

None. Vinyl is the way to go for Godspeed :P

Yanqui U.X.O. is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. It has more ugliness and postpones the satisfaction of riding epic crescendos more than than their previous albums, which along with the absence of found voices might be why it's considered a lesser album, but it may well be my favorite. The dissonance makes the emotions more poignant.

million dollar basher 07-16-2009 04:42 PM

shameless praise for "Lift Your Skinny Fists"

F#A# Infinity is a great album--"Dead Flag Blues" is thoroughly disturbing and "Providence" was a decent track--but I don't feel like it best exemplifies what Godspeed was typically capable of. If I were to suggest an album, I might have to go with the standard and suggest "Lift Your Skinny Fists". The album just generates such great momentum from beginning to end, and the instrumentation is phenominal. And for how much I kind of enjoy listening to that spoken word piece at the beginning of "Dead Flag Blues", I feel like the speech clips in some of the tracks from "Lift Your Skinny Fists", paired with the accompaniment, summon emotional and intellectual issues that seem much more poignant and distressing.

"Static" and "They Don't Sleep Anymore" are two frightening pieces of music, especially due to the spoken-word segments and the theremin arrangements.

Great album. Can't decide which I like more, "Lift Your Skinny Fists" or "Yanqui UXO"

gotjuice 07-16-2009 05:24 PM

Yes obviously I would have suggested Skinny Fists as a first album to listen to, but...

Made a account here just to say

I ****ING LOVE GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR!!!, talk about ****ing epic jesus christ. Psychedelics(or lots and lots of weed)+GY!BE is like being born again

As for the tattoos segment of this thread. I thought about getting the Hope hammer as a tattoo, maybe the antennas album art reworked to where it looks like the hands are dropping bombs

Any suggestions?

gotjuice 07-18-2009 12:27 PM

Either one of those would be incredibly badass IMO.

Davey Moore 07-23-2009 03:29 PM

Whether or not you like it, I believe F# A# Infinity is one of those albums that has to be experienced, it's one of the more unique albums out there, like Comus' First Utterance or something.

This post is 110% win.

Also, I didn't realize how great Dead Flag Blues is until I could picture the bearded man from Iron Man narrating.

haha, you mean Jeff Bridges?

I'm having a hard time picturing the Dude reading that piece.

I have always wondered who recited the monologue at the openning of "Dead Flag Blues"

does anybody know?

Mojo 07-28-2009 08:19 AM

Incredible band. One of my personal favourites to throw on and chill out to. I personally don't have issue with the length of tracks or albums either like a lot of people appear to, if i'm going to listen to Godspeed then i'm gonna put an hour or an hour and a half aside to devote to it. One of the more experimental and more importantly effective post-rock bands i've heard and I know some would call them pretentious but I think they have the goods to back it up.

gotjuice 07-28-2009 01:15 PM

I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but up until yesterday I had never actually heard Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada.

All I can say is holy shit. The way the monologue on BBF3 builds into that chilling climax literally took my breath away. Moya is a damn fine track too. I'm really kicking myself that I waited this long to check out the EP.

million dollar basher 07-28-2009 01:57 PM

Good stuff, right?

Well, that's just like your opinion, man.

million dollar basher 07-28-2009 03:50 PM

Davey, you're out of your element.

And also let's not forget, let's NOT forget, dude, that keeping wildlife...an amphibious rodent for ummm....y'know....domestic.....within the city limits.....that ain't legal either.

Just got my hands on this as well, definatley their best work.

gotjuice 07-28-2009 05:03 PM

I don't think it tops Skinny Fists, but it's definitely a close second.

After some more listens I agree with this. I think Skinny Fists is pretty much a 10/10

Roemilca 08-12-2009 02:20 PM

I love Skinny Fists as well, but Slow Riot is a different side of GY!BE. I don't know what I'm saying.

Slow Riot> Skinny Fists> Yanqui (if i even spelt that right)> self-titled...?

Someone slap me.

Shoe 08-14-2009 08:13 AM

I am absolutely in love with Yanqui U.X.O and have yet to pick up Skinny Fists. Just so everyone knows I have very high expectations thanks to the hype you've been giving it. I think I'll get it today.

EDIT: Just got it.

If you loved Yanqui U.X.O. you should prepare to have your mind blown by Skinny Fists. Great choice. Grab the Slow Riot EP too if you don't have it.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-09-2010 06:52 AM

Do they have tour dates up?

dac 04-09-2010 07:03 AM

I will be at one of these shows no matter what the cost.

million dollar basher 04-09-2010 01:14 PM

I'll be looking into this...definitely

Joshua A.C. Newman 04-09-2010 09:56 PM

Most intriguing! I can't parse their "news" page to figger out where they'll actually be playing, though.

gotjuice 04-09-2010 10:30 PM

I don't think the tour dates have actually been announced yet.

dac 04-10-2010 10:30 PM

*crosses fingers for anywhere near Ohio

clutnuckle 04-16-2010 10:16 PM

I'm hoping for a nearby show eventually.

Just the idea of a reunion is jaw-dropping.
