I'm not sure where to go with this but I think here's a good place.

I want something that's really dark and depressive, somewhat relaxed in parts, and also rather chaotic and noise in other parts. I feel like I'm explaining black metal a bit but that's not what I want. I want something post-rock like yet I want it to be really dark and depressive but also want some really chaotic sections.

If nobody can come up with anything that's fine too. If you have something you think I would like even if its not exactly this link me up or whatever and I'll check it out.

Thanks in advance, Hank.

As mentioned in the top 10 Zorn, Kristallnacht. Univers Zero's Heresie is undyingly cruel to the listener. Albeit, I don't know if much chaotic parts.

^Wow, that's great. Like a soundtrack to some classic horror film or noir. It sounds like a lot darker Art Zoyd. Oh, wait, is this group in some relation to Art Zoyd?

Your description reminded me immediately of this:

Maybe not so dark, but certainly depressive and moody. The whole album is actually a mix of dark and moody post-rock like parts on one hand and chaotic, noisy and improvisational on another.

They were both in Rock in Opposition.

Both RIO bands, Univers Zero is actually technically a split-off of Art Zoyd. Kind of both pioneers of the same style of music at the same time. Generally Univers Zero tends to be a bit more percussive, and Art Zoyd tends to be a tad more melodic.

This album is up there with Cromagnon's Orgasm as the most unsettling album to listen to with the lights off.

I am lacking of this genre. Any instrumental bands? Or anything to get me started with this genre, maybe some of your personal favorites.

Avant-garde by definition goes in a million different ways. So, it's difficult to pinpoint. Bondage Fruit is a very good choice for somebody who is looking for something experimental that's still instrumentally impressive.

I can send some over, if you like.
