Most are good apart from U2 & Snow Patrol (I like early stuff though ); but they are just wanks in general)
Good irish bands I can think of just now are The Thrills, Gary Moore...**** I guess they arent really that many that Ive heard of there will be more just cant think of top of my head right now. But Irish bands are not so bad

yvi_poison 04-20-2009 04:08 PM

I like - the thrills, alot! They are from Dublin right?

Neapolitan 04-21-2009 09:02 PM

It depends what you mean by "Good Irish Band." If you mean Good Irish Bands as actual band from Ireland then Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, U2, & The Cranberries - the only ones I can think of know. But if you mean Good Irish Bands for playing Irish Folk Music then the band to check out is Orthodox Celts, and they're not even Irish, they're Serbian. A Good Irish Band (but not actually an Irish band on the technicality for being fictional movie band) is The Commitments from the movie The Commitments. In the movie they're a Blue Eye Soul band from Dublin.

You should check out the band,Orthodox Celts on Youtube.

Yeah think so I dont know much about their background I just used to really like the album 'So Much For The City' years ago when I was into Stereophonics and mostly just bland music. I havent listened to them in years as I have moved on to other things but I might dig it out and give it a listen. I also bought another album of theirs but never really listened to it all the way through- 'Let's Bottle Bohemia'. So what other music do u like?

Oh yeah I forgot about Rory Gallagher...how could I lol. As for U2 their early stuff is good up till about Achtung Baby they started to go ****. What Ive found with U2 is that I just cant listen to their stuff or appreciate it just simply for what they are now. Thin Lizzy I totally forgot about too. Sorry mate but The Cranberries suck big time.. & Im tempted to download Orthodox Celts.. Serbians playing Irish Folk Music??? I need to hear it!

I read about Rory in guitar magazines long before I actually heard of him, (like they say the reputation preceeds the man) Fender made an awesome replica of his Guitar,

I love U2 when they first came out, but lost interest same as you with Achtung, Baby, but I like some of the newer stuff.

Cranberries were a throw-away, no need to apolgize, I couldn't think of any more bands, still I do like some of their songs like Dreams and Linger.

someone mention Irish heritage so here is my list

Irish Heritage

The Real Irish:
Seamus Tansey - Irish flute
Seamus Ennis - uilleann pipes, penny whistle, mouth music
Turlough O'Carolan - some of his work are transcribe to guitar and are worth hearing

Scotch-Irish (Scots-Irish) Americans:
Elvis Presley
Johnny Cash
Eddie Cochran
Merle Haggard

Irish-Catholic Americans:
Black 47 - NYPD Irish rock band

Irish-Liverpudians:
George Harrison
Paul McCartney

I didn't want to stray from the topic but while one the subjuect of Irish bands let's not forget
Bands from Scotland!:
The Rezillos - the first and best Punk band in the UK during the 70's
Big Country - In A Big Country is one of the best one hit wonders in America during the 80's
Tanahill Weavers - the best for Celtic instrumental music.

Can believe no one mentioned Therapy?

One band that deserves to be mentioned are JJ72. It's a shame they split up because they never got the recognition they deserved.

One of the guys at my local record store gave me the album Nurse by them. I haven't listened to it. Am I missing out?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-25-2009 07:38 PM

Nurse was about the only decent thing they did.

After that they became this turgid alt rock/ metal hybred ruining covers of Husker Du & Wire songs on a regular basis.

Nurse is ok, Troublegum is a better bet though. Anything after that though is a bit hit or miss. Suicide Pact - You First would be my next choice.

daysleeper1985 05-04-2009 06:18 PM

If you're looking for modern irish artists then you guys should check out Director, The Frames and Bell X1 (i could add 60000000 different artists to this thread, but right now they're my favourites)

Zer0 05-05-2009 02:17 AM

There was some really great music around in the 90's. One band some of you might find interesting are Rollerskate Skinny, they featured Kevin Shields' younger brother Jimi

Another band that made some really great music in the late 80's and early 90's were Something Happens

ChiliColdBlood 05-05-2009 10:25 AM

I was fortunate enough to be at this show:

fatgreg 07-24-2009 07:24 PM

not strictly irish but im extremly suprised they havent been mentioned are the tossers
Theyre irish American and from chicago way way better than flogging molly and drop kick murphys and to be honest id rate them higher than the pougues on a lot off stuff.

I cant post a link to anything as I havent posted on here enough yet but.. look em up on my space or you tube or whatever

the tossers

Zer0 07-26-2009 04:49 PM

Some of the newer breed for you good people

Brilliant live band

They're a bit hit or miss but this is a cool song. Brilliant video as well.

If you're epileptic steer clear of this one btw

simplephysics 07-26-2009 05:04 PM

Fight Like Apes are awesome, MayKay is absolutely insane.. I'd love to see them live.

Anyways, I quite like Queen Kong & You're Only Massive, they're a guilty pleasure if I've ever had one.

Ugly Megan are halfway decent, they're are a sort of happy little twee/folk duo who happen to be irish too.

If you're an 80 year old grandmother  i doubt there's any on MB

Anyway, whether you like this next lot or not they're pretty much going to be huge

This version doesn't sound to bad, but if you can find the original single version it sounds way better :)

And that's a guy singing by the way...

durp 10-07-2009 11:00 AM

there's a great irish band in upstate new york called macana. I believe they are all brothers.

PaddyGuitarist 10-13-2009 08:44 AM

Irish Bands I'd recommend...

The Pogues
Christy Moore
The Exiles
The Wakes
The Dubliners

derek 07-03-2010 01:42 PM

Not sure if they're still around, but The Coors were pretty good for a while there.

Goblin Tears 07-03-2010 01:44 PM

God Is An Astronaut

glastonelle 07-04-2010 03:32 AM

When I think of Irish bands I instantely think of U2. While theyre an old bunch of ****ers now, their original old stuff is really quite good. The Joshua Tree and such.

staurtjohn321 07-07-2010 12:49 AM

Undoubtedly U2 is the best.

... and probably the only Irish band you've ever heard. Seriously people there's more to Ireland's musical output than U2. Try listening to some A House for example.

loveissucide 12-14-2010 09:26 AM

Oh ! Emporer are decent.

I was listening to their album for a while, it sounded good enough on the first few listens but it kinda started to bore me after that. There's a few decent songs on it alright but there's plenty of unmemorable ones too. 'Heisenberg' is a nice haunting song though.

Deakin18 12-14-2010 04:38 PM

The Script are a good band, just saying. I love U2's older stuff, it is some good stuff.

Not folk music singing about 2 horses over the hill, but simply intsrumental music using bohdrans (however you spell it) and uellian pipes (however you spell it) or bagpipes and fiddles and all that stuff.

I never know where to find it, I hear it used on TV or in movies all the time, but never seem to be able to find it. Whenever I come across Irish music or celtic music it all tends to be 'Ahhh shiver me lady, she shine quite shady, Carryin me pints on me way, La de da de da etc'

Can anyone help? Cheers

Yes, I`ve been looking for that kind of music too !

You might like to check out these guys, who all focus on lively musicianship with traditional instruments, rather than smooth "Celtic Mood" romance :-
- Lunasa; lots of old-style but fresh-sounding jigs. All their stuff is instrumental, as far as I know.
- Sharon Shannon; described as the Jimmy Hendrix of the accordian, she successfully blends Irish folk playing with Latin/ Scandanavian and other folk elements.
-Altan; their Island Angel album is half and half - fast, beautifully played jigs alternate with slower, sung ballads.
-Shooglenifty; an exciting mix of traditional Scottish and electronic dance music. If they`re using the bodhran, it`s lost among the electronic tweaks and clangs which make Solar Shears one of my favourite albums.(Only one track has vocals.)
- Gaelic Storm; notable for featuring in the lower-decks dance sequence in Titanic, for my liking too many of their songs have Jovial-Boozers-All type lyrics, which is another pitfall for Celtic bands, right ?

Well, good luck - I`m off to check out the list that Hype8 posted here earlier, and some of the other suggestions too; The Bothy Band and The Tannahill Weavers are supposed to be good.

spacetruckers99 12-22-2010 07:47 AM

I love the good old irish folk song "whisky in the jar"
Covered my thin lizzy, metallica and loads of other bands.

Never get bored of that tune ;)

blacxhathax0r 06-27-2011 01:21 PM

The Irish Rovers and Flogging Molly.

Moshe 06-28-2011 04:10 AM

I don't really think the Irish are good at "Rock" overall- tho I sort of liked Think Lizzy. I just find U2-especially Bono- irritating.
Some great Irish Folk bands, tho. The Chieftans and the Dubliners
And the Pogues when that drunk guy with bad teeth was still with them

Davy Spillane is a master of the uileann pipes. Check out his album "Shadow hunter". Also "The legend of Deirdre" by Mychael and Jeff Danna. And of course, "Erinsaga" (see me about that, or any of these you'd like to hear)... :pssst:
