Is Johnny Cash country? (singer, hardcore, rock, gospel, genre)

Has anyone heard that bootleg album Johnny Cash did with Bob Dylan. It's pretty solid I might add.

Some of his stuff is country. More of it is folk. Most of is unclassifiable.

You kids need to remember that Johnny's SUN RECORDS years were more Rockabilly, than Country. And Rockabilly was the early roots of Rock and Roll. Yeah, he did some Country stuff. His later years were genuine, unadulterated AMERICANA. That's the only way to describe it. If you can call his cover of Nine Inch Nails' HURT Country, well... you ain't been listening to your Country radio...

Alright this thread should have been closed long ago as metioned before. But you guys keep on bringing up blasphemy. Johnny Cash was a country singer. COUNTRY. He definetly may have been the first true ROCK STAR, based on his image, but the guy is a COUNTRY musician. That really isnt debatable. If you really wanted to get all into your specific little tiny ranges of elistist genre naming that most people dont know or care about, then you could technically call some of his stuff rockabilly. This cannot however be streched to call him a ROCK musician. Remember kids, image and music are different things, even if all the major labels tend to disagree.

Oh and just because you cover a song of another genre does not mean you are related to it in any way. RMC did Aerosmiths 'walk this way', is he now a credible rock musician too?

I think you need to clarify the definition of "Country", because Country back when Johnny was singing it, definitely wasn't like the stuff they do, today.
