That's pretty much the internet - good stuff and a lot of crap too. A bit like dumpster diving. Oh, yeah, I know know Mike McClure, Stoney, and the bunch. I also like what's being called the Mississippi hill country blues (I didn't know Mississippi had hills, just delta)

Sure, I'm always open to recommendations, enjoy them actually. That's the best way to find the good stuff that never gets mainstream. My tastes are really broad - blues, folk, bluegrass, cajun, alt-country, all the way into African and Latin. Please no rap or hip hop, hee hee. It just leaves me cold, doesn't even feel like music to me. And I love music. My oldest son is a folkie, and my youngest is a metalhead, go figure. Still, I don't know why, but the darker stuff really resonates. When I first heard 16 Horsespower, I was gobsmacked. Same with O'Death....

Hey Pete, been meaning to respond to you for a little while. The dark cabaret seems like a logical direction to explore. There used to a group from Boston called the Dresden Dolls that I think would fall into that territory. I haven't listened to them myself but they got a lot of buzz for their dark theatrics.
Been poking through your files and got some stuff, thanks. Especially for Joey Allcorn and Headwater, I'd been trying to locate those and they aren't on emusic. When I get some time I'll follow your uploading advice and get some of my collection up.

Unkindness - welcome! I've got Two Gallants but don't think of them as Southern blues inspired. I thought that they were west coast emo kids! You're right about them being depressing, though. I must be twisted, I don't mind that.

What do labels mean anyway? I still can't wrap my head around "post-modernism" for instance. Just what the heck is that? Or emo? Still, they work as general guideposts, I suppose. My metalhead son can hairsplit between deathcore, screamo, and a gazillion sub-genres that sound the same to me.

Shit, this is nineteen pages and I don't want to read it, but the idea of anything sounding like this one song right here excites me. Also I checked out one song by I think Elliott Brood and liked, I'll be extensively checking out this thread later to find out if there is gold here when I'm in less of a hurry.

Thanks for that Pete. I'll probably get around to them eventually but I just got my hands on Fifty Foot Horse, BONG, the Nuggets compilations and vol.2 of Pebbles.... So when I have my hands less full I'll be sure to check it out.... oh yeah and homework, whatever, homework can wait, although class starts in 20 minutes and it's a 15 minute drive so I should get on that probably. =/ Thanks again.

Looking around some blogs I've heard some interesting tracks by Have Gun Will Travel, Prison Book Club, and Digger Barnes. Anybody heard them?

Peculiar Pretzelmen
Circus Contraption
The Bad Things
Beat Circus
Rosin Coven
The Scarring Party
Harlequin Jones
Clare Fader & The Vaudevillains
The Dead Brothers
Reverend Glasseye & his Wooden Legs
Vermillion Lies
The Deadfly Ensemble
If you enjoy that style of dark cabaret you need to check out Devil Doll, it seems I can't link urls right now but you'll find many clips of various lengths on youtube. Parts cabaret, classical, rock and experimental, it makes alot of the bands you listed look kinda amateurish, Mr. Doctor really hit the mark with his albums, they're amazing.

I can't stand country and the horrible noise I have to put up with on Cat Country but I LOVE a lot of the stuff I've been hearing in here! It's a whole different monster. I love quite a bit of Folk and Dark Cabaret sounds extremely fascinating. So far Sons of Perdition, O'Death, and Those Poor Bastards are now some bands I DEFINITELY need to look into. I'm gonna read into Dark Cabaret more tomorrow morning after sleepy sleep.

That's pretty much how I felt when I first heard Ambassador by Elliott BROOD back in 2007. The only other country artists I really enjoyed listening to before then was Corb Lund and Johnny Cash and had pretty much resigned to the fact that all other country was horrible. Now that's certainly true to a degree, but there are some really good alt. country acts out there besides the overrated Wilco. The Gothic Country genre really makes me wish I lived in the South just so I could actually see a lot of these bands because they don't seem to travel out west as much as they should. Anyways I'm glad you're liking the music so far.

I'm a huge fan of this stuff. I really dig O'Death, Those Poor Bastards, Elliott Brood so on. Could anyone hook me up with some download links? Its near impossible to find anything on Mediafire/Megaupload/Rapidshare and torrents dont agree with my computer at all. By the way, I know this is my first post but I'm here to actively discuss music not just get links and leave, lol.
