Coming back to the work. There's still a lot of music to show. Considering all the genres, we only have seen the "tip of the iceberg".
* Mecano (Spain, 1981-1992). One of the most influential 80's pop bands in the Spanish-language music, with a huge success in many Latin American countries, and also in France and Italy. Hoy no me puedo levantar ("I Can't Get Up Today", 1981) is about a hangover after one of those early-80's lively weekends in Madrid. Aire ("Air", 1984) is metaphorical and subjective, but it probably describes some kind of ecstasy experience. Some other of their hits are (click): Maquillaje ("Make-up", 1982), Hijo de la Luna ("Son of the Moon", 1986), Cruz de navajas ("Cross of Knives", 1986) and La fuerza del destino ("The Force of Destiny", 1988). Mujer contra mujer ("Woman Against Woman", 1988) talks about a lesbian love, Naturaleza muerta ("Still Life", 1991) is translated below and Una rosa es una rosa ("A Rose is a Rose", 1991) is a love song sounding like a rumba. * Now, two songs from Amaral's last album (Gato negro, Dragón rojo, 2008): And here, playing Escapar (the Spanish version of Slipping Away) together with Moby. Live (2006): |
* A must-listen group: Presuntos Implicados (since 1984). This is a unique case in the Spanish-speaking music, and at the same time one of its most important acts of all time. These guys have a very special ability to combine pop music with influences from funk, soul, blues, Latin American (including Brazilian) music, jazz, ballads and Mediterranean folk, in a way that no other Spanish-language band has ever done. The result of their original "formula" is a delightful music, which has succeeded in both sides of the Atlantic. Soledad Giménez (a sweet and beautiful voice) was the band's leading vocalist until 2006 (then she went solo). I absolutely recommend their entire discography. You won't find any other act with all these particular features in the Hispanic pop music. The following are just a few examples: Alma de blues ("Soul of Blues") is an homage to Billie Holiday. Cómo hemos cambiado ("How We Have Changed!") is about nostalgia for a lost old friendship. Mi pequeño tesoro ("My Little Treasure") is dedicated to a baby son. La flor de la mañana ("The Morning Flower") is a love song. La flor de la mañana is exceptionally beautiful. It's very difficult to translate (and obviously, translation doesn't sound the same), but... :o: ♫ "Eran sólo dos extraños...........They were just two strangers concediéndose deseos.............granting each other's wishes como dos enamorados.....................like two lovers que vaciaron sus manos.............who emptied their hands de desengaños y miedos.............of disappointments and fears y de afecto las llenaron.............and they fill them with affection. Calmaron con fresas su hambre,...............They eased their hunger with strawberries, con vino su sed.........their thirst with wine y el frío con su calor.............and the cold with their warmth. (..) Y pensaron los dos:..............And they both thought: ¿Qué habrá tras tu mirada,..........What is there behind your gaze, que tanto oculta y tanto da?..........that hides and shows so many things? (...) La flor de la mañana hoy.............Today you sowed the morning flower sembraste en mi ventana..........................at my window fingiendo que fingías.............pretending to be pretending que me amabas..........you were in love with me. (...)" ♫ Fingiendo que fingías que me amabas (Pretending to be pretending you were in love with me) Awesome Also (click): Sed de amor ("Thirst for Love"), La noche ("The Night"), Palabras de amor ("Words of Love"), Me das el mar ("You Give Me the Sea") and Esperaré ("I Will Wait"). Todas las flores ("All the Flowers") is another love song. Gente ("People") talks about both love and human brotherhood. |
I've always been a fan of Silvio Rodríguez's early stuff, mainly just 1970s, specifically Al Final de Este Viaje, Días y Flores, y Mujeres. Pretty folksy stuff with absolutely amazing lyrics, pretty much poetry set to music.
One of his classics from Al Final, Ojala: |
wow! how weird to find silvio rodriguez here. his lyirics are beautiful.
well I love music in spanish specially music from my country so I could be ages posting band names and songs, but today I'll just share with you two songs, by this man who has filled my life the last 3 years with the most beautiful music. YouTube - Anochecer - Lisandro Aristimuño y Kevin Johansen YouTube - Lisandro Aristimuño "Cerrar los ojos" En vivo 2 (sorry I haven't figured out yet how to make the whole video thing appear haha) |
Can't do it! Although I had a Juanes album for a while..good stuff.

For instance, I think I should add more info about all those great Argies from the 70's (Pescado Rabioso, Pappo, etc.). Also, Calamaro, Soda Stereo, Babasónicos, Bersuit Vergarabat, Fito Paez... and that's only to mention a few... whew! Too much work for a single person. Will you help me? :) Quote:
|
thanks!!! that was helpful!! sure I'll help, I must admit I'm more into under sort of bands though, but I do love Pescado Rabioso, Spinetta, Soda! so it sounds great!
I was thinking about Manu Chao btw, where in Spain are you? the other day a friend of mine showed me this song and I just loved it |
Not a huge fan of this guy. "Mexican Institute of Sound" You can look it up on youtube (again I would embed if I could) , look up a song called "Cumbia" (really dig the samples he uses).
Pretty fun Latin flavored dance music. That particular song really does not have lyrics, but he does have songs that use the "spanish language". Pura Vida Vatos! |
Quote:
Russian Red (I mentioned her at this another thread) is from Madrid too, although she sings in English. Quote:
Another well-known Mexican act with a similar style (at least in some songs): Plastilina Mosh. |
how nice Madrid!!! I've got a couple of friends from that city, one from Barcelona and a very very good friend from Sevilla. spanish people are really cool!
Papá cuentame otra vez, god that's such a sad song. Ismael Serrano is a great song writer! I really like this song |
Spanish Stroll by Mink DeVille and Vamos by the Pixies are about the only (partially) Spanish language songs I own.

Quote:
Me vuelvo loco ("I'm Losing my Mind") and Me voy de casa ("I Leave the Nest") And in the 90's, Los Rodríguez. Amazing band too: Mi enfermedad ("My Disease") "Estoy vencido porque el mundo me hizo así......I've lost heart because the world made me this way. No puedo cambiar.............I can't change. Soy el remedio sin receta..........I am the medicine without a recipe y tu amor mi enfermedad.........and your love is my disease. Estoy vencido porque el cuerpo de los dos.........I've lost heart because this body, mine and yours, es mi debilidad........is my weakness. Esta vez el dolor va a terminar.............This time, pain is gonna end. (...)" |
Althought it's not only spanish (a lot fo english lyrics), last weeks I am really enjoying this band :)
|
Punk rock now: Siniestro Total. One of the best (if not the best) bands in the genre. Apart from the already-mentioned "classic" I'll Dance on Your Tomb, here you are a few more hits, with their characteristic mocking tone. These are Asssumpta (who was "a girl from Barcelona") and Pueblos del mundo ("Peoples of the World"):
♫ "Pueblos del mundo: ¡extinguíos!..........Peoples of the World: kill yourselves! Dejad que continúe la evolución........Let evolution go on. esterilizad a vuestro hijos........Sterilize your children. Juntos de la mano..............Let's go together hand in hand hacia la extinción............towards the extinction." ♫ Cuenca minera ("Coal-mining Area") is a funny song about some crazy miners. Hermano, bebe ("Brother, drink") is a brilliant ode to alcohol: ♫ "(...) Hermano, bebe,............................Drink, brother, que la vida es breve,......................because life is short, y aunque a ti no te lo pareciere.......and believe it or not, el más grande bien........................even the biggest good thing siempre es pequeño.......................is always small. No seas berebere, Mohamed...........Don't be a Berber, Muhammad. (...)" ♫ *Ayatola, no me toques la pirola ("Ayatollah, Don't Piss Me Off", 1982) was "dedicated" to Khomeini (when he prohibited music in Iran). Nowadays we could dedicate it to Ahmadineyad. :D *Bueno, pero no empecemos... (an homage to Pulp Fiction) *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPv3-HMkteQ (a sarcastic song about chastity) *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfrjdS0Y_SU *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxPOvgUFCzM *Cristina... And now, shoegazing. De la monarquía a la criptocracia ("From Monarchy to Cryptocracy") by Triángulo de Amor Bizarro, and Nunca estás a la altura by Klaus & Kinski: |
More top-notch rock: Loquillo (since 1980). This singer's pseudonym refers to the Spanish name for the famous cartoon character Woody Woodpecker. Until 2007 he was accompanied by several musicians, forming the well-known band Loquillo y Trogloditas, one the best acts of the Spanish-language rock scene in the 80's and 90's.
A few examples: El rompeolas ("The Breakwater") and La mataré ("I'll Kill Her"): ♫ "No hables de futuro,...........Don't talk about the future, es una ilusión.............that's an illusion cuando el rock & roll...............since rock & roll conquistó mi corazón...............won my heart." ♫ (El rompeolas) Cadillac solitario ("Lonely Cadillac") and Cuando fuimos los mejores ("When We Were the Best"): ♫ "Siempre quise ir a L.A.,..........I always wanted to go to L.A., dejar un día esta ciudad,..........to leave this town one day, cruzar el mar en tu compañía...........to cross the sea together with you. Pero ya hace tiempo que me has dejado.......But it's been long since you left me y probablemente me habrás olvidado..........and you probably don't remember me anymore. No sé que aventuras correré sin ti........I don't know what adventures I will have without you. Y ahora estoy aquí sentado........And now I'm here sitting en un viejo Cadillac segunda mano..........in an old second-hand Cadillac. (...) Quizás el Martini me ha hecho recordar.........Maybe the Martini has woken my memories up. Nena, ¿por qué no volviste a llamar?...........Baby, why didn't you call me again? Creí que podía olvidarte sin más..........I thought I could just forget you... (...) El amanecer me sorprenderá..................Daybreak will catch me dormido borracho en el Cadillac,.......sleeping it off in the Cadillac, bajo las palmeras, dulce y solitario..........under the plam trees, sweet and lonely. Y dice la gente que ahora eres formal...........And people say you're serious-minded now. Y yo aquí borracho en el Cadillac,.........And I'm here, drunk in the Cadillac, bajo las palmeras, dulce y solitario.........under the palm trees, sweet and lonely. Y no estás tú, nena..........And you're not here, baby...." ♫ Todo el mundo ama a Isabel ("Everybody Loves Isabel") and Rock & Roll Star: And (click) Autopista ("Highway"), En las calles de Madrid ("In the Streets of Madrid"), María, La mala reputación ("The Bad Reputation"), Simpatía por los Stones ("Sympathies for the Stones") and many more. As I said, this is a top band. There are several compilations. And they released two excellent live albums too. |
* Los Romeos (Spain, 1989-1996; there's an Argentine band also named Los Romeos, of which we''ll talk later on). Rock and power-pop. They only published three albums, but they're full of great songs. Especially the third one, Sin conexión ("Without Conexion", 1996).
Me comeré tu corazón ("I'll Eat your Heart") and Arañas mi piel ("You Scratch my Skin"): ♫ "Me comeré tu corazón,......I'll eat your heart, me beberé tu sangre.....I'll drink your blood..." ♫ Mi vida rosa ("My Rose-Colored Life") and Dentro de mí ("Inside of Me"): ♫ "Pienso todo el día en acariciar...........All day I think about caressing tu dulce cuerpo hasta llegar.........your sweet body until reaching al reino que ya conocemos.........the kingdom we already know." ♫ (Mi vida rosa) And (click) Déjame caer ("Let Me Fall"), Muérdeme ("Give Me A Little Bite"), Lejos, muy lejos ("Far, Very Far"), Un poquito de amor ("A Little Bit of Love"), Mi cielo ("My Sweetheart") and Sueño loco ("Crazy Dream"), among others. |
I really hate admitting to this but I love Juanes

The punk-like boldness of the "From Monarchy to Cryptocracy" song appealed to me, and the video has some memorable images. The consistently pretty, almost ethereal sound of Nunca estás a la altura by Klaus & Kinski jangled on in me for quite a few minutes after listening to it. Really, very nice. :) |
yeah i love all of the above

I'm sure that From Monarchy to Cryptocracy's video contains many references from 70's horror films (like those directed by Dario Argento, etc.) and perhaps some kind of esoteric symbolism. I'm not especially interested in that particular cinema genre, but I know there are several "cult movies" from that decade, at least to the genre lovers. Klaus & Kinski (a funny name, BTW) has an attractive dreamy sound, indeed. I can hardly understand what they sing (you know, that's shoegazing) but I like this band. Song En la cama (which means "In Bed" and, more of less, it says ♫ "In bed / In your bed / That's the best / Beside you / That's what I like it / In bed..." ♫) perfectly expresses the feelings of an infinite and pleasant laziness (or, as Italians say, dolce far niente), like in a Saturday morning, preferably together with a sweet sleepy lover. :) I also like, among other songs, Ley y moral ("Law and Morals"): it has surrealistic and almost-inaudible lyrics, but it sounds good to me. |
* Another one of my favourite indie bands: Los Punsetes. I admit they're a little crazy (well, maybe totally crazy), but I love them anyway. A perfect example of how to combine dreamy and evocative music with surrealistic and humorous lyrics. This is Maricas ("Gays"):
♫ "Quiero morir en una discoteca llena de maricas.............I wanna die at a disco full of gays. Quiero morir bebiendo vino a morro de una barrica................I wanna die while drinking wine straight out of a cask. Quiero morir en el preciso instante en que lo diga una chica.............I wanna die at the very moment a girl wants. Quiero una muerte tonta de esas que nadie se explica..............I wanna have one of those stupid and incomprehensible deaths. (...) Quiero morir en las garras de un ser omnipotente.............I wanna die into an omnipotent being's clutches. Quiero morir con los brazos abiertos de cuerpo presente.............I wanna die with open arms and lying in repose. Quiero morir en una conferencia frente a un ponente.............I wanna die during a lecture in front of the speaker. Quiero cantar canciones guarras en brazos de la muerte.............I wanna sing dirty songs while being in Death's arms. Se supone que la vida no es tan estridente.........Life is not supposed to be that shrill. Mamá está equivocada y los libros mienten..........Mum is wrong and books lie. Mamá está equivocada y los libros mienten..........Mum is wrong and books lie. Mamá está equivocada y los libros mienten............Mum is wrong and books lie..." ♫ |

Wanna listen to a good Spanish cover of Dylan? Memphis Blues. That is, Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again. By Kiko Veneno and Santiago Auserón (aka Juan Perro, ex-Radio Futura's vocalist and composer): |
^^hardly my fave Dylan song but that's berry nice
|
lol...not quite, but hey..
|
Well... I don't know how to define this, but... :)
(chorus) ♫ "Ella es la vampira........She's the vampire que cambió mi vida.........that changed my life cuando un sábado noche........when a Saturday night me mordió en mi coche.......she bit me in my car. Y ahora estoy perdido.........And now I'm lost porque me he convertido..........cos I've become en su amante clandestino,........her clandestine lover, en su amante vampiro........her vampire lover..." ♫ Papá Topo: La chica vampira ("The Vampire Girl", 2011). |
Does Tito & Tarantula do Spanish songs? I like 'em.
|
buy the recent "ACID RUMBA" compilation, great stuff there and a good introduction to spanish psych flamenco and the likes!
Carlos Saura's "VIVRE VITE" soundtrack is also a good introdution |
google "vinilisssimo" for good reeditions. try Banda Trapera del Rio for a punk

It reminds me of the so-called Andalusian rock. BTW, we'll talk about it soon (Triana, Medina Azahara, etc.). Stay tuned. Now, three new bands more: Edredón (it means eiderdown). Alternative / Electronica / Psychedelic. From the homonymous album, these songs are Querido pedagogo ("Dear Educator") and Bautismo ("Baptism"; here they sing in French, but never mind :)): If you liked it, try these two instrumental tracks too (click): Dialéctica ("Dialectics") and La bola de los anillos ("The Ball of the Rings"). * Cosmen Adelaida: A todo color ("Full Color"; a nice rhythm from minute 1:36 on). Odio París (that means "I hate Paris" :)): Cuando nadie pone un disco ("When Nobody Puts On A Record"). |
^^cheers, I only have T&T's English songs
|
second song is very nice ;]
|
Now we go to Chile. There's a vibrant indie scene there. In the last two years there's been a boom.
* Dënver (it's a duo). Eclectic music. Their last album is Música, Gramática, Gimnasia ("Music, Grammar, Gym", 2010). Adolescence as a common thread. These songs are Lo que quieras ("Anything You Wish") and Olas gigantes ("Giant Waves"): Lo que quieras ♫ "Si el invierno te es muy largo........If Winter is too long for you yo puedo acortarlo..............I could make it shorter. Si te gustan los planetas.........If you like the planets yo te los llevo a tu puerta...........I could take them to your door. Y si quieres ver a Dios..........And if you want to see God tengo su foto en un cajón............I have a photo of him in a drawer. (...)" ♫ En medio de una fiesta ("In the Middle of a Party") and Los adolescentes ("The Teenagers"): To be continued.... |
News:
* Nena Daconte is no longer a duo. Vocalist Mai Meneses goes solo, although under the same stage name. On November 2010 she published Una mosca en el cristal. In my opinion, not as good as the two earlier albums (btw, the first one has an outstanding artistic level to me), but at least it contains four or five notable songs. Pregúntame ("Ask to Me") and Una mosca en el cristal ("A Fly at the Window"): Also (click): Niña azul ("Blue Little Girl") and Por ti ("Because of You").* Indie band Nudozurdo has just released its third album: Tara Motor Hembra. And I love it. Superb, excellent, splendid, magnificent.... I don't know what adjectives to write in. Absolutely recommended. Even better than previous record Sintética (2008). It shows an unusual sensitivity to me. I find it captivating, emotive and exquisite at the same time. It combines an innovative sound (at least to the Spanish-language music) with introspective and metaphorical lyrics (frustration, love, self-esteem, solitude, torment, sadness, fear and other feelings). Golden gotelé ("Golden Sprayed-On Paint") and Conocí el amor ("I Knew What Love Is"): Conocí el amor ♫ "Hay algo sucio............There's something dirty dentro de ti..................inside of you. Hay algo oscuro..............There's something obscure que quiero para mí................and I want it to be mine. Entré en tu cuerpo...............I went into your body en una ocasión:.................once: vi arder mi casa,..............I saw my house in flames, conocí el amor..............I knew what love is. (repeated) No hay nadie humano................There's no one that is a human a tu alrededor...............around you. Siempre has querido............You've always wanted ser el mejor...........to be the best. (...)" ♫ Dosis modernas ♫ "Si mi mente destruye ................................ If my mind destroys todo lo que deseo, ................................ every wish I have, si en tus labios siempre ................................ if in your lips always hay algo mucho mejor, ................................ there is something much better, si detrás de esa puerta están ................................ if behind that door they are vendiendo oro negro, ................................ selling black gold, lo quiero comprar ................................ I want to buy it y sentir que su brillo ................................ and feel that its shine se incrusta en mi piel. ................................ gets embedded in my skin. Sube, mi amor, ................................ Come up, my love, no hay nadie dentro. ................................ there's no one inside. Sube, mi amor, ................................ Come up, my love, a mi cerebro. ................................ to my brain. Y qué quieres que haga ................................ What can I do, si ya no me divierto, ................................ if I don't enjoy myself anymore, si todos mis movimientos ................................ if all my moves dicen que me detesto. ................................ say that I loathe myself. Y qué quieres que haga ................................ What can I do, si ya no puedo ................................ if I no longer sentir lo que siento, ................................ feel what I feel, si grito con fuerza mi nombre ................................ if I shout my name out loud y apenas me puedo escuchar. ................................ but I can hardly hear myself. Sube, mi amor, ................................ Come up, my love, no hay nadie dentro. ................................ there's no one inside. Sube, mi amor, ................................ Come up, my love, a mi cerebro. ................................ to my brain. Si mi mente destruye ................................ If my mind destroys todo lo que deseo, ................................ every wish I have, si en tus labios siempre ................................ if in your lips always hay algo mucho mejor, ................................ there is something much better, si detrás de esa puerta están ................................ if behind that door they are vendiendo oro negro, ................................ selling black gold, lo quiero probar ................................ I want to try it y sentir que su brillo ................................ and feel that its shine se incrusta en mi piel. ................................ gets embedded in my skin." ♫ I promise I will translate more Nudozurdo's lyrics. http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/5805/smileyange.png For now you can read three of them translated here. |
