For a really unusual sound and world music concept - check spotify:track:5L1GVkqCBiCDpx7HEWIdNd
a special Norwegian world/folk/jazz concept with a dash of Irak - haunting, beatiful, heavy grooves and odd rhythms...

Very neat track there, Lisna.

Listening to Graceland reminded me of a CD I have kicking around by this group, and since it's less then a month until Christmas, how about a Nigerian carol?

And another FF track for you, Lisna.

These are soooooo beautiful! Thanks for joining us here Pet_Sounds :)

What's your connection to Nigerian music, if you have one?

Lisnaholic 12-02-2014 05:47 AM

^ Yes, misspoptart, I completely agree with your sentiments and your question. The Betelehemu clip in particular is superb - especially the brief appearance of a soloist half-way though.
I´m also curious about why you have such an uncommon cd "kicking around", Pet_Sounds. What´s that about?

In comparison, the only thing I can offer MB at the moment is something that is very well-known indeed - especially to anyone who saw that strange movie, If...

And welcome to MB, Niallo23  When I followed your recommendation from spotify to YouTube, I found this slow and haunting piece. Very nice - though probably too jazzy for misspoptart! I wonder what other music you like ?

Lisnaholic,

I'd like to recommend Anais Mitchell, too. Sorry if someone else already has. I can't praise this American folk singer highly enough. Her Hadestown is genius.

Here's the first song of that Orpheus-Eurydice folk opera:

To answer your questions, Miss P and Lisna, I've seen the African Children's Choir in concert a couple times. They're made up of children from impoverished African countries who tour and receive an education here.

And thanks for joining us, mordwyr! I haven't had the chance to listen to all of these clips yet, but when I get a chance, I certainly will.

No, never heard of Anais Mitchell before, Mordwyr, and I´m very impressed with that track; I´ll definitely be investigating the rest of the album.Thanks.

I´m not a big genre nazi, but once in a while you hear something and you wonder, What genre can that be? My first guess with Anais Mitchell would be Freak Folk, I think.
And here´s a band -or duo, really- whose music is pretty difficult to pigeon-hole too:-

Anais Mitchell is one of my favorite artists of all time. Her collaboration with Jefferson Hamer on the Child Ballads is brilliant.
