I agree, each of the three main albums has its own style of beauty, although I`d go along with Seltzer, who said he prefered Bryter Layter. I like the richness that comes from the extra instruments : the lush strings of Introduction, the jazzy piano of Poor Boy , the touches of sax in City Clock. In comparison, I sometimes feel that there`s not enough happening on Pink Moon.

BTW, some guys might not realize that:-
(i) " Five Leaves Left" was the printed reminder that the RIZLA+ cigarette paper company used to put near the end of their packets: when you read the message, you only had five cigarette papers left.
(ii) When Nick sings about "sailing downstairs to the northern line" in Parasite he`s talking about taking the escalator down to one of London`s oldest, longest and deepest subway lines, the, er, Northern Line.

I feel like this thread needs a bump. I'm giving Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake a listen tonight. I'm really liking it, especially since I have listened to Pink Moon at least a dozen times, if not more. An absolutely talented man, it's a shame he died so young.

One of my favourites.

For me Pink Moon is really a stand out favourite from his other albums.

Howard the Duck 08-19-2012 09:57 AM

Pink Moon for me as well

as again, what's there not to appreciate?

I love all his albums but Five Leaves Left is the one that really stands out for me, could be because it was the first album of his that I really loved.

For me its probably the River man.

The sad truth is that without the post-humous albums, there isn't a whole lot to choose from, being that he only released 3 albums which in his time didn't a lot of coverage.

Such an underappreciated artist in his day, who has since gone on to become a legend!! All of his albums are fantastic....Pink Moon is my personal favorite though...love the sparse arrangements.
