I don't have a gun and I don't mind relying on the police, and I don't disagree with gun regulations, but the idea that my own safety should be farmed out still reeks of 1st world complacency that is only possible so long as Western civilization remains stable. It's a mentality that is allowed to exist because it can be allowed to exist rather than what would be reasonable in any other time and place in history. TBH it's perfectly reasonable that people would be slow to adjust.

I'm certainly not saying there's nothing irrational about my feelings as they are in fact feelings, but in a vacuum I'd very much like the option of mounting an MG-42 on my roof to repel Allied invasions.
