People who've been abused tend to be the worst judges of how good a parent they'd be. They get so caught up in convincing themselves they're not like their abuser that they lack self-awareness. Maybe they should just suck it up and think of the potential kid before thinking how nice it would be to have one.

If you've grown up in an abusive household and are self-aware enough to know that it is not right, normal or healthy, you should be ardent enough to know how to treat your own children. That's my experience, anyhow.

"Should" is a worthless word in this instance since it presupposes self-awareness, even though that will often be impaired by psychological damage.
