I think they had a better approach and a wider depth of influence like being Swell Maps fanatics and such than most popular 90's groups
Sonic Youth are an 80’s group. Along with Big Black and the Butthole Surfers and Dinosaur Jr they were what made the 80s the greatest decade rock’n’roll would ever know.

Yeah. I mean I remember when it came out and my heart sank. It was like Sonic Youth had been gentrified. And Goo is painfully inferior to Confusion, BMR, EVOL, and Sister.

I don't agree on a personal listening level but I respect the opinion. Goo and Daydream Nation were my first exposures to SY so the nostalgia levels beat down any taste changes that have occurred since. I've expanded my preferences for more experimental or "unsafe" sounds but I can still go back to easy peazy late 80's/early 90's staples any day of the week.

they have their own unique sound like any good band, but I don't see them as much different from the general ZG of 90's guitar music blending punk/shoegaze with arena rock

I guess they're inherently better because less metal

Their crazy Branca tunings and screwdrivers and hammers bending the strings into howling madness in way that felt sacred. They were definitely pioneers. There’s no playing the who did what first game. They brought it on stage uncompromised and made it rock’n’roll. It didn’t matter that only 20 people showed up. Profound music history was made and they murdered rock’n’roll guitar. They took it to the conclusion and ripped it to shreds.

80's was great because punk set rock music free from the guitar god boring approach

the aftermath of punk was "anything goes" in popular music

This gets into things like you not liking The Beach Boys. You still don’t understand rock’n’roll.

why isn't Branca the last word then?

or No Wave in general

that was the nail in the coffin imo

Because Branca wasn’t rock’n’roll. He was working in the framework of Varèse not Chuck Berry.

like you know, 5 or 6 other huge bands

No.

Good for him. I hope his parents get the death penalty.

lol

They should only get the death penalty if they consent to it.

The Batlord 02-07-2019 10:46 AM

Why should they be condemned to life when they never consented to it to begin with?
