How similar were the actual notes? That sounds like the real deciding factor. Can you look at the tabs and say definitively that they're just way too similar?

About half of the Stairway intro is borrowed from it and given the circumstances, I'm positive Zeppelin lifted it.

I heard "Tauros" a few years ago, and it's only vaguely reminiscent. Same tempo, I think so. But it seems like it would be more influence than anything.

I agree.

Led Zeppelin cleared of plagiarism in Stairway case - BBC News

Quote:

During the trial, defence lawyers argued the chord progression in question was very common and had been in use for more than 300 years.

Also, Zeppelin's absurd defense is that they were too wasted at the time. If you're trashed and commit a crime it still happens, you rich bitches.

Try being shitfaced 40+ years ago and try to remember anything. In terms of rape or murder, valid. Obviously. But this is a simple guitar intro a 6 year old could learn. There's no weight to any of this at all, and I'm glad Zeppelin won this case. Viva La Jimmy!

Great song. Vaguely reminiscent. At least these guys can sleep knowing they've been cleared of the blame. Zeppelin did have a lot of copyright issues in the past, but they were right in stating that instrument and style have been around for 300 years.

I'd take that point seriously if Zeppelin didn't write Stairway shortly after touring with Spirit.

Sure, be right back.

Zeppelin's a hot topic today, not just on this thread.

Chula Vista 06-24-2016 10:30 AM

VH1 did a poll a few years ago using musicians, critics, fans, etc. from the past 3-4 decades, and asked them to rate the greatest musical artists of all time.

1. The Beatles
2. Michael Jackson
3. Led Zeppelin

I can live with that.

Frownland chimes in with his usual "popularity doesn't mean ****" response in 5... 4... 3... 2...

Michael Jackson? People are ****ing dumb.

Preach!

Are there 300 years of songs they can officially point to that are close to "Stairway to Heaven" to prove their point? I don't care either way, but I'd be amused if Led Zeppelin had to pay out the ass to a band who would never had made more than two pennies off their song if not for Zeppelin making it a marketable product.
