Barring a landslide victory the senate is typically controlled by a handful of independents who control the balance of power with their deciding votes. It will be interesting to see that power controlled by a dynamic community of voters.

Sceptics drop atheist Richard Dawkins for retweeting video mocking feminists and Islamists
To be honest, I can totally believe this. |
Article title should be Skeptic to match the association that they're discussing. Fire that editor.
That is a stupid decision on their part though. ****ty opinions or not, he has a good mind on a lot of the things that they discuss (plus I don't think that feminism is really a topic for debate this year? total guess). Reminds me of the Paula Dean controversy. |
I find Dawkins a little annoying to be honest. He is as much a zealot as any of the religions he criticises. He is to atheism what Germaine Greer is to feminism.

Admittedly I've never actively sought out any videos or books, so I'm pretty uneducated about him, only see and read some stuff here and there. But I don't think the sole fact of being sarcastic and facetious in such discussions is particularly bad or wrong. And I don't think religion and atheism are in any way equivalent, just as flat earth theory and...I guess... reality(?) aren't, so apparent zealotry on his part weighs much less for me anyway. I'd be interested to witness instances of him being the dick he is made out to be though. But no 2h videos please. As for the actual topic at hand: Yeah, that's ****ed up. And the video is pretty funny and spot on (for some at least). |
The Selfish Gene is a good book. Unfortunately, I think Dawkins became addicted to the limelight and became a bit of a troll.

Philly Councilman introduced bull requiring performer registration and police authorization
Basically what this means is if the cops don't like you, you're not playing. So I guess all future performances in Philly if this bill passes will be dadrock cover bands and Jimmy Buffet. |

Kind of archaic though, isn't it? Plus a lion or something would do a much better job.

PBS and WikiLeaks reports:
Private corporations have made an 8 billion dollar industry selling NSA-level surveillance tech to hostile dictators and wanted political criminals around the world, permitting them unhindered access to the electronic communications of their opponents, governments, and the citizens of any nation. And it's 100% legal. |

I suppose given the fact some of them connect to the internet and/or have a cam (something I was not aware of) this shouldn't be too much of a shock, but it remains creepy as ****. |

Horses can recognise human emotion.
I heard one of the scientists talking about this on the radio a couple of days back; he was behaving like it was breaking news, proudly proclaiming that only dogs were believed to possess this ability, yet anyone who's ever worked with horses knows they're very intelligent and sensitive animals. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mongols knew it 800 years ago. |
