Interesting indeed. I'd like to know what kind of influence they will have over the next couple years. Hopefully I remember to keep an eye on this.

Barring a landslide victory the senate is typically controlled by a handful of independents who control the balance of power with their deciding votes. It will be interesting to see that power controlled by a dynamic community of voters.

Porn film accidentally shown at funeral service for father and baby son | UK news | The Guardian

Quote:

'The Rev Lionel Fanthorpe, who led the service, said: “I remember looking up at the screen and seeing some type of video come on and a very loud noise.

“I look at my congregations instead of the TV screen, but when I heard this noise and members of the congregation moving towards the screen, I realised something was wrong. Members of the family were very distressed. Thankfully an engineer came to fix it and turn it off. It seems to be some kind of electronic accident.” '

Sceptics drop atheist Richard Dawkins for retweeting video mocking feminists and Islamists

To be honest, I can totally believe this.

Frownland 01-29-2016 05:48 AM

Article title should be Skeptic to match the association that they're discussing. Fire that editor.

That is a stupid decision on their part though. ****ty opinions or not, he has a good mind on a lot of the things that they discuss (plus I don't think that feminism is really a topic for debate this year? total guess). Reminds me of the Paula Dean controversy.

Stephen 01-29-2016 07:00 AM

I find Dawkins a little annoying to be honest. He is as much a zealot as any of the religions he criticises. He is to atheism what Germaine Greer is to feminism.

I keep hearing those things about Dawkins and never quite know where they're coming from.
Admittedly I've never actively sought out any videos or books, so I'm pretty uneducated about him, only see and read some stuff here and there.
But I don't think the sole fact of being sarcastic and facetious in such discussions is particularly bad or wrong. And I don't think religion and atheism are in any way equivalent, just as flat earth theory and...I guess... reality(?) aren't, so apparent zealotry on his part weighs much less for me anyway.
I'd be interested to witness instances of him being the dick he is made out to be though. But no 2h videos please.

As for the actual topic at hand: Yeah, that's ****ed up. And the video is pretty funny and spot on (for some at least).

OccultHawk 01-29-2016 09:59 AM

The Selfish Gene is a good book. Unfortunately, I think Dawkins became addicted to the limelight and became a bit of a troll.

Philly Councilman introduced bull requiring performer registration and police authorization

Basically what this means is if the cops don't like you, you're not playing. So I guess all future performances in Philly if this bill passes will be dadrock cover bands and Jimmy Buffet.

It's just one bull, how is it going to enforce the legislation all across the city?

Idk, something about getting more power over people (especially different, artistic types who can shape opinions) really gets an arousal out of government officials.

Frownland 01-30-2016 08:53 PM

Kind of archaic though, isn't it? Plus a lion or something would do a much better job.

That's true. Leftöver Crack wouldn't have a chance playing in Philly with a lion in charge. Sure, they'll lead you on that they can stand up to any kind of abuse but a healthy mauling would certainly do them in.

PBS and WikiLeaks reports:

Private corporations have made an 8 billion dollar industry selling NSA-level surveillance tech to hostile dictators and wanted political criminals around the world, permitting them unhindered access to the electronic communications of their opponents, governments, and the citizens of any nation.

And it's 100% legal.

I suppose given the fact some of them connect to the internet and/or have a cam (something I was not aware of) this shouldn't be too much of a shock, but it remains creepy as ****.

You could make a good horror film with that premise.
Either with some run-of-the-mill sick **** or with a supernatural twist to it.

Horses can recognise human emotion.

I heard one of the scientists talking about this on the radio a couple of days back; he was behaving like it was breaking news, proudly proclaiming that only dogs were believed to possess this ability, yet anyone who's ever worked with horses knows they're very intelligent and sensitive animals. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mongols knew it 800 years ago.

I mucked some 20 stalls every morning back when I was a farm hand, and yes horses can understand human emotion. Even disgust.

Mr. Charlie 02-12-2016 09:57 AM

If civilians were armed and these ISIS cowards knew of this, they would still attempt blowing people up instead. Unless someone perceptive enough is able to kill one before he blows everything to shit. Regardless, nothing stops terrorist attacks, sadly
