the military is the only reason this empire exists. without controlling all the world's oceans how do you figure the us economy will fare?

US military is kind of naughty... but we do keep trade seas safe. We're the leading power of the world though. Cutting spending on defense after making so many enemies wouldn't be clever.

Social democracies, yes, but now in Norway our government is the bluest we've had since around WWII, two of our parties in the executive branch openly distance themselves from socialism (or prime minister recently called our left wing parties "Stalinist"), and our Labour party has slowly been leaning more and more to the right.
