This reminds me of stuff going on over here in Australia... a lot of aboriginal citizens are refusing to take minutes silences for events like ANZAC day and refuse to celebrate Australia Day or what they believe to be 'Invasion Day.'

There is an alternative to the minutes silence which can show equal respect without being too formal.
The minutes applause here at United's Old Trafford football ground;



Probably a more sincere response when the condolences are less than personal.
