My aunt and uncle are over in California for holiday and they were set to leave on Saturday but the airlines are saying the earliest they could get them a flight would be on the 27th. I think that's more of a worst case scenario thing, but in the meantime they're nearly broke and stuck in San Francisco for up to another week.

During my weekend visit in SF I met a lot of British tourists who were stuck and in similar situations, but I also heard that people are being asked to keep their receipts so there may be the possibility of some kind of reimbursement. I think that some of the major cities should start doing some kind of charity soup kitchen or something because after awhile eating out gets very expensive and especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, so that would be a very kind act if places like the US and Canada were to step in and help alleviate some of the worries.

According to NBC the airlines are losing 200 million dollars a day because of this so there's some real nasty financial consequences for this too which could hinder the recession recovery process. It really is amazing how one little volcanic eruption could reek so much havoc on people's lives. I tell you, I'm really happy not to be in any of their shoes right now.

My mom's cousin from England is supposed to come over here the first week in May. Hope everything's okay by then.

Doesn't Iceland have a larger super volcano , like the ring of fire in the midwestern U.S?

I wanted to tear my teeth out. I didn't know what I wanted to do. And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it. I never want to forget. And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that.

Read the thread's first post perhaps?

It seems likely that the volcano Katla will erupt as well which is much larger according to the news.

It'll probably calm down soon, tendencies pointing to that have been seen. Still, this only goes to show how fragile society is. The lives of millions of people was interrupted because of a little ash.

I dare you to try to successfully pronounce this. News readers everywhere are hopeless at it.

On topic, I feel really bad for the people stuck in Europe, and will the aviation industry actually recover from 240 million a day loss in funds?

Of all the people on MB, I think I stand a fair chance at pronouncing Eyjafjallajoekull right .. It seems to be made up of words we have in norwegian language. "Fjell" here means mountain and "joekull" must be "jøkul" which means a stretch of glacier like the part of a glacier coming down a mountainside. Iceland was inhabited by norwegian ancestors back in the days so the languages are quite similar. They're much better at preserving the old stuff than we are.

I'm supposed to travel back up to the arctic sometime in summer .. Hope I don't get stranded up there because the darned volcano starts burping again.

I believe you. To be honest I want to hear your voice because it seems as though you'd speak so articulately.
