Honestly, let people do what they want. I really don't see why people seem to think that if two men get married, it affects our lives. We don't get so worked up over men and women getting married, and look at the divorce rates of that. Yet, we can't allow to men who love each other dearly to legally be married? Are we really that ****ed up?

Also, these religious nuts need to understand the concept that the Church is separated from the State. If the CHURCH ruled the USA (as in, a total theocracy), sure, it would be a completely different story. But since the government is completely secular and should not be affiliated with any particular religion (or side with one), then who can legally marry whom is their call, not the church's call. I think they are afraid that their moral beliefs will be eradicated or that they will not be allowed to have them, but that's not true.

Same-sex marriage is legal in Canada and has been for awhile, and guess what? We haven't gone to shit. So I'm not really sure what right wing Americans are afraid of here. The planet's not going to explode if this law is passed.
.

Even if the bible did offer a very detailed guide about marriage it should not matter. Separation of church and state is in place for a very good reason; America is not a theocracy, as you pointed out. Religious beliefs and an individual's interpretations of a book written by 'men' thousands of years ago should have no bearing, ever, on any practice. As long as no one is being hurt and the relationship/bond/marriage is between two consenting adults, then it is a-ok. (And no else's business; the slippery-slope argument is a crock of ****)

Just because an individual decides to accept man-made rules and guidelines based on religious/personal beliefs does not mean they have the right to impose those beliefs on everyone. Especially, when those beliefs are preventing individuals from equal rights and treatment.

I agree with you BD, and I hope the US will get on board with Canada. I couldn't pass the opportunity to expound my thoughts on the matter. I plan to devote a good bit of my career to the study and spreading knowledge about the LGBT community, particularly about the modern family.

I for one hope that this bill passes but my ignorant, stereotype-based outlook on the average US citizen suggests to me that the Supreme Court will shoot it down regardless of the complete lack of an actual argument of any form on the bigoted side. There's a similar proposition over here in the UK that's meeting a lot of opposition that I honestly didn't expect, so even if it doesn't pass here it'll give me hope to see it pass somewhere else.

I was under the impression that same sex marriage was already legal in the UK. I guess I was wrong. That's surprising to me, actually. It's legal here and in a few other countries though.

Nope, we have civil partnerships that give gay couples some extra legal rights but they aren't anywhere near equal to marriage in the eyes of the law. I think the US currently has the same system as well, but don't quote me on that.

No one is trying to pass a bill here. These are two court cases that have been brought against existing anti-gay state and federal laws.

Like many things in the US, it varies from state to state. Same sex marriage is already legal in about 1/5 of the states.

Welp, guess I'm about as ignorant on this issue as I thought. I really should have known better from seeing the "Supreme Court ruling" part of the title. I'll just remove myself from this until the inevitable homophobes turn up so I have some people to call idiots.
