That's what I was taught as well. Thoughts come up, and you let them pass like a leaf on a stream, no judgement. It's definitely something that takes practice and routine.

Yeah. You might try making your breath the focus of your meditation before turning to simply letting your thoughts go. Making your thoughts the focal point of your meditation is more advanced and I often find it upsetting. It’s been at least a few months since I’ve meditated because the thoughts and visions that started coming up starting getting so ****ed up.

I found this guided meditation where you repeat “My mind is at ease. I’m at ease with my mind.” I made a personal self-guided meditation recording for myself that’s about 25 minutes long that starts with a focus on the breath and allows for letting my thoughts run free and also uses that mantra for a bit. I’m pretty staunch about sitting up straight and being absolutely still. I typically keep my eyes open during the focus on breath and closed on the focus on thoughts or the lack of there being a “you” outside of your consciousness. When youre on breath (or maybe an object like a candle or a tree) when your thoughts wander you can gently pull them into the subject. After doing that for a while when you let go... it can be like damn. If you go 20 minutes with almost no movement that’ll change how you feel for sure. If you get up to an hour it can get ****ing surreal.

People who do it for hours on end... that must get tripped out like crazy.

Right now focusing on my breath makes me cough and worry that I have the virus lol

I think that’s really advanced though. To really get there it’s like there’s no or little distinction between meditation and daydreaming and that’s like saying you’re meditating all the time which is like **** monks say.

Honestly it came to me on the first try but I'm kinda good at just staring off into space anyway. Came to realizations about how I feel about my deadbeat dad and cried like a bitch. For the rest of the night I was this weird like actual good person who (it was at military boarding school) walked around the barracks and was disturbingly nice to everyone and made friends with people I hated (even that one guy whose Misfits albums I'd end up stealing). Wore off after about a day or two and I never had patience to keep up with it so nothing ever became of me seeking enlightenment.

Meditation for the Day
Quote:
The inward peace that comes from trust in God truly passes all understanding. That peace no one can take from you. No person has the power to disturb that inner peace. But you must be careful not to let in the world's worries and distractions. You must try not to give entrance to fears and despondency. You must refuse to open the door to distractions that disturb your inward peace. Make it a point to allow nothing today to disturb your inner peace, your heart-calm.

I still get absolutely nothing from trying to meditate

"Just recognize the thoughts as thoughts"

I can do that but it's just boring.

My best "meditation" comes from listening to instrumentals while laying down.

I recently whipped out the twenty for hours a day book and going to start reading the prayer, meditation and thought of the day each day like I did when I lived in Minnesota.

Meditation for the Day
Quote:
Keep as close as you can to the Higher Power. Try to think, act, and live as though you were always in God's presence. Keeping close to a Power greater than yourself is the solution to most of the earth's problems. Try to practice the presence of God in the things you think and do. That is the secret of personal power. It is the thing which influences the lives of others for good. Abide in the Lord and rejoice in His love. Keep close to the Divine Spirit in the universe. Keep God close behind your thoughts.

I mean how is that different from just listening to music lol

Maybe I'm just expecting too much. I remember the first YouTube monk who I ever tried to learn about mediation from said he can get a feeling from mediation more intensely pleasurable than an orgasm. I don't expect that but at least something noticable otherwise I can't be bothered.

I feel the same way sometimes jwb also. Plus I dont know the difference between my peaceful music jamming to real full effect meditation. I assume my meditation practices will evolve as I get older.

When you're listening to music, you're being guided by the artist. When you meditate correctly, you're being guided by your inner self, or your focus of inner energy.
