Well, politics, religion, race and other socially relevant topics (I'm speaking in general right now) often tend to be hot button topics. I've never seen topics like that not end up in a flame fest. Actually those topics are usually debated here in a relatively peaceful manner.
It does get heated quite often, but people seldom resort to straight out hatred, flaming and serious insults.
