Take your pick.

Sporting events would start off more interestingly if they sang punk songs instead of dreary old bar songs.

EU referendum: Cameron sets June date for UK vote - BBC News

23rd June.

Lisnaholic 03-20-2016 09:11 AM

I only half-heartedly follow UK politics, but I noticed the news about Iain Duncan Smith. My understanding is that he was pretty much a laughing stock when cast as party leader on account of having no leadership qualities at all, but that was a few years back.

If he's now resigning on a matter of principle and blowing the whistle on what appears to be the Tories cynical squeeze-the-poor-reward-the-rich money management, he suddenly leaps up in my estimation.

Oh, and about the referendum, has there been a big MB debate somewhere that I've missed?

Cuthbert 07-13-2016 11:37 AM

Thoughts on Theresa May? I thought her speech was decent.

Lisnaholic 07-13-2016 07:16 PM

Yes, I thought her speech was very good. She sounded sincere and well-intentioned and did a nice job of trying to engage, to include everyone. I hope she can actually deliver on some of the improvements she's promising.

The good news too is that Britain is advancing past the initial Brexit uncertainty, which Cameron was inclined to leave hanging until October. That would've been really disastrous!

Lilja 07-13-2016 10:40 PM

I just think it is incredible how fast Camerion moved house. I mean, it has only been a bit over two weeks since he has left office and he has already packed up and moved. When I moved, it took a lot longer.

Seriously though, May seems like a decent person. I am sure you all will do well with her (although I do wonder, with May becoming PM and Hammond as chancellor, all you need is Clarkson for your foreign secretary and you have the cast of the former Top Gear :D jk)

I do think Brexit did put the EU into perspective for many countries in the EU. It is not just this vague entity that we belong to. Perhaps it will make the EU stronger?

Update: Wait a minute. Boris Johnson is your new foreign secretary?

Always found it interesting how PMs live in the same house. Wonder if Theresa will find one of Dave's pubes in the shower.

Lisnaholic 07-17-2016 04:50 AM

^ However fascinating that line of enquiry may be, I'd like to turn to Lilja's clever post:-

^ I like your observation about the cast of Top Gear, Lilja, and Clarkson's reaction to Johnson's appointment! How well-informed you are about British culture - I feel I should apologise for knowing so little about Sweden.

Yes, rather worrying that Theresa May has chosen Boris Johnson for such a high-profile diplomatic position, especially as diplomacy is something he hasn't yet learned how to do.

If, as you suggest, the EU could be stronger, more cohesive without Britain, I wonder if we dare hope for a win-win situation for both EU and Britain? After all, that's how some divorces end up, and here, for example, is a glimmer of optimism about post-Brexit UK:-

UK offered Brexit free trade deal with Australia - BBC News

THe problem the EU now has, is that if the UK leaves and get a good deal everyone else will want to leave AKA the end of the EU

Oriphiel 03-25-2017 02:17 AM

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Goofle 03-25-2017 05:40 AM

The funny thing is that the joke you reference is still absolutely relevant after about 8 years.

Oriphiel 03-25-2017 06:58 AM

It actually is. I guess British sport culture hasn't changed as much as we had all hoped in those eight long years.

Goofle 03-25-2017 08:18 AM

I was speaking specifically about Arsenal who have the same manager still bringing Walcott on and trying to walk it in. But yeah, football jokes usually age well.

noticed that it was on the local news here tonight. what's man's thoughts on Mother Theresa and the other candidates?

Cuthbert 04-18-2017 04:14 PM

Tories should win, hoping the SNP loses seats in Scotland though.

50 odd days to go though so we will see.

Yes, a clear win for T. May would strengthen her bargaining power for Brexit, which has to be good for the UK.

So this clip is barely news, but I'm posting it because I like the short video of the results (approving a June election) being announced. As usual in the House of Commons, it's a mix of schoolboyish jeering and arcane ritual, like a scene from the assembly hall at Hogwarts.

General election 2017: MPs back plans for 8 June poll - BBC News

I'll be in the UK that month. Should be interesting to observe a foreign election firsthand.

Hey, that's great news! I wonder where you'll be exactly? Be ready for a PM that will quiz you in exhaustive detail about yr trip, ok?

Erm what? London is ace for visiting. Don't listen to him PS. Also be sure to hit up the north, obviously do exclude Bradford, unless you're wanting to visit the National Media Museum. Leeds (my home city), Manchester and Liverpool are worth visiting. You should also definitely visit Cambridge and the surrounding towns and villages, especially in Suffolk. Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill have a lot of history and are really nice picturesque places. I mean I don't know where you're going but thought I'd give me thoughts. Have a good trip though, mate.
