I dunno the rest of the first world seems to have it figured out pretty well. But that doesn't mesh well with American ideas about like... healthcare not being a human right and stuff.

I agree in principle, but the ACA just wasn't the right step. I see reform of the private health care system to be the first step, and anything beyond that should be a further one if that doesn't work. Try to fix what is broken before you take more drastic measures.
