I don't know how people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but I do know that American corporations exploit the Democratic Republic of the Congo and that children work in those mines to provide me with phones and laptops. It's probably better to work in an Apple store than it is one of those mines but that doesn't mean I condemn the Democratic Republic of the Congo and praise America.

Like, I actually understand the gist of what you're saying. The firehose method of propaganda used by Putin and Trump to confuse reality by simply applying the benefit of the doubt in ways that are impossible to deal with have been used in less explicit forms exactly all of human history to make people less sure of themselves, and I can see how our using facts and logic can do the same to you in a way that is honest but in 99% of human discourse ends up with tricking the person into falling into #normal ways of thinking even when accepting those ideas didn't require falling into those ways of thinking and the people inserting facts and logic weren't even attempting to subvert free thought.

It's just the way human social behavior works. It's about conformity, not enlightenment.

Watching an interview with Chuck Schumer.

He called for this to be declared a national emergency on Jan. 26

Trump gains support by blaming it on the “impeachment hoax”

Just recently I was trying to read some stuff by Willard Van Orman Quine who was a philosopher whose ideas about linquistics influenced Chomsky.

I was reading it without any notes on what it means and it’s over my head but I still think what he was getting at was the more you break language down the less meaning it has and since it’s meaningless at a super micro level there’s always that ghost of ambiguity at the level of basic communication.

So next is just my own thought about that but if you can use that ghost of ambiguity inside the words effectively and you use verbal communication as a means to power it works. People who never or only rarely read have far less experience with language so they get tripped up easier. And you can’t build these skills through short fragments like on twitter and Facebook. You actually have to read books. Even more challenging, you even need to read books that aren’t fun to read.

Bro reading books and becoming politically engaged doesn't make you immune to manipulation. It just changes how you are manipulated. I mean Fox News exists on this premise. And it's true for many who scoff at Fox News.
