I mean doesn't he just call himself a democratic socialist? Which is still a capitalist system?

The entire conversation is a distraction. To engage in it makes people worry.

I don't expect anything really.. democracy is horse ****... But it's worth a try. Could at least shift the overton window.

Simple fact is a Biden type also has very little prospect of getting his policies (such as public option) passed either, and will also be branded as a socialist for trying. So there's not even much pragmatic value to that approach, on top of being uninspiring.. Remember the fight over ACA? That was with the Dems controlling both branches of Congress. Things are even more polarized today, and Obama was still smeared as a communist.

There's no escaping that reality. But maybe if you start from a more extreme position, any potential negotiation you enter into will have to be further towards that goal than if you started in the center from the get go. Maybe right leaning compromises like the ones Obama and Biden worked out with the Republicans will be less likely. Or maybe it's all meaningless. Would at least be mildly interesting to run the experiment and find out.

Sure. We’re at the bottom of a well. But a glimmer of hope is better than none at all.

Democratic presidential candidate and former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg is facing questions after recent revelations that his 2020 effort has taken campaign contributions from an infamous Republican Party billionaire with direct links to the Russian oligarchy. That’s according Federal Election Commission (FEC) data reviewed by Law&Crime.

Previously described in the press as “The Giver,” Leonard “Len” Blavatnik is a well-known GOP donor with a New York address who previously took it upon himself to fund President Donald Trump‘s lavish — and allegedly criminal — inauguration festivities in 2017 to the tune of some $1 million.

A summer 2017 commentary for the Dallas Morning News by Ruth May catalogues a bit more of Blavatnik’s political spending habits:

Donald Trump and the political action committees for Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Lindsey Graham, John Kasich and John McCain accepted $7.35 million in contributions from a Ukrainian-born oligarch who is the business partner of two of Russian president Vladimir Putin‘s favorite oligarchs and a Russian government bank.
