Is it cancel culture when comedians can’t find work like Roseanne, CK, Kramer, and Cosby?

I guess the first three could work if the were willing to face it.

3 out of 4 of those people were getting by on reputation alone and Louis was touring earlier this year. I think that the majority of the inconsequential "cancellations" that we're seeing now are marketing campaigns targeting the demographic that has a bone to pick with the libs.

I like how people are pissed at Chomsky for signing that letter that was anti cancel culture, including some of his fans.

You have to be completely unfamiliar with his past statements and positions on free speech in order to find this surprising.

Canceling somebody is free speech technically.

Yes, but the question isn't whether it's constitutional but whether it's productive for open dialogue.

Free speech as a concept isn't necessarily just a legal matter, it's also an ideal. The 1st amendment is there because it was considered that open dialogue and discussion are healthy for a democracy and a pluralistic society. The reason that the 1st amendment only addresses state censorship is because the constitution literally only exists to delegate responsibilities to and place restrictions on the government.

I don't know if "closed" is the right word, more like stifled. If certain ideas are out of bounds then that necessarily limits the dialogue along certain ideological lines.
