so i had my first computer science course today (it's whack af soo boring thx for asking) and i kept hearing these loud abrupt noises coming from across the class and quickly realized that somebody in the class obviously had tourettes.

so anyway i look over and see that directly across the classroom where the noise happens to be coming from sits a pretty nerdy looking white kid who i just assume must be the one.

like 15-20 minutes later i discover it's actually the middle eastern dude in a ralph lauren jacket sitting in front of him.

tl;dr i think i'm racist towards crackers or society as conditioned me to believe only dorks can have tourettes

Fair point. I don't live in the UK. But what I see on the telly does seem to point towards black people there getting more harassed than other races, but you're certainly in a better position to confirm or challenge that than I am. I think the point still stands though; along with the Jews, blacks appear to be one of longest-oppressed races, would that be fair?

Either way, when we think of prejudice and racism these days, other than muslims or Islamic countries, we tend to think I believe about black people. There aren't too many threads complaining about the treatment Asians, Kurds or any other race or ethnic group is receiving.

Maybe I'm just looking at it through a lens filtered by decades of watching the news and too many movies (Mississippi Burning!) but that's how it appears to me.

If there is any group that would be getting harassed then that would more likely be Asians imo.

I don't see why a joke would not be OK.

It's 'too far' when it isn't a joke.

Case by case but the okayness will always be in your favour if you're actually funny and not just attempting to be edgy.

Whether it actually reflects racism is a case within cases by cases within cases type of thing.

I guess it depends on how genuinely funny it is. "Paddy Englishman, Paddy Irishman, Paddy Scotchman" jokes usually had a point and you kind of couldn't take offence. Also, the other two who weren't the butt of the joke usually got ribbed too. I never considered them particularly racist, though of course they were. Jokes about black people are probably less nuanced, though I admit I haven't heard a joke I would call really racist in some time. As Frown says, case by case I guess. And it also depends on whether or not it's your race being joked about.

The important question I would ask about jokes seen as racist is: are they used just to be racist or are they used to make a funny (depending on your standpoint of course) point? I mean, nobody ever wants to hear from Bernard Manning again, do they? :yikes:

Paddy and Murphy are traveling to Australia. Before they leave home, one of their dads gives them both a bit of advice: "You watch them Aussie cab drivers. They'll rob you blind. Don't you go paying them what they ask. You haggle."

At the Sydney airport, the pair catch a cab to their hotel. When they reach their destination, the cabbie says, "That'll be twenty dollars, lads."

"Oh no you don't! My dad warned me about you. You'll only be getting fifteen dollars from me," says Paddy.
"And you'll only be getting fifteen from me too!" adds Murphy.

Texan walks into an Irish pub, says "Thought you guys had big mountains here? Bah! Why, back home I could stand at the top of one of our mountains and yell MURPHY! and the echo would come back MURPHY MURPHY MURPHy MURPhy MUrphy..."

"Hah! Sure that's nothin'!" says Paddy. "Round here, I can stand at the top of that mountain there and yell MURPHY! And the echo will come back: WHICH MURPHY DO YE WANT???"

Trollheart 09-06-2017 02:58 PM

Paddy is hitch-hiking home, big car pulls up, Merc. Paddy gets in, all wonder. The driver realises he's got a thick gombeen Irishman here and decides to have some fun when Paddy asks about the Mercedes logo on the front. "What's that for?" he asks. Driver says "That, my friend, is a sight. Ye see this guy on the bike here in front? Well now, I just line up the sight, gun the accelerator and ..."
And he roars up to the frightened cyclist, but at the last moment swerves away, laughing. Turning back, he says to Paddy "Close one there! Nearly had him!"
Paddy leans back nonchalantly in the back seat, a grin on his face.
"Sure, no problem boy!" he beams. "Sure didn't I get him with the back door as we went by?"

Much like racism itself, one needs to consider the power dynamic.

If the group being made fun of has social, economic, and political power than I would say it's generally OK.

Man like Monkey's joke is pretty great. Western Europeans (well, not the Irish) have been running the world for the last 300 years or so, so poking fun at their foibles won't earn you much SJW backlash.

For the record, I'm all for anyone telling any joke they want. I might not say it but I'll probably laugh if it's clever or subversively shocking (Kramer's shouting of the n-word failed on both counts, hence his rightful excommunication from the entertainment industry). It's pretty tough to tell a good 'race-based' joke imo.

I prefer terrible puns.

Not really. Us Irish prefer slagging each other off. When I was growing up it was stupid Kerryman jokes, like
"How do you keep a Kerryman entertained? Give him a piece of paper with PTO written on both sides" or "How do you keep a Kerryman in suspense? Tell you later." Stuff like that. We Dubs were very superior in our attitude to those "outside the Pale". In a humorous way of course.

I'm calling out people that don't give a ****. The people that start **** over things that literally don't matter for the sake of feeling good about themselves. If you understand it's easier to persuade but you're not going to try if you don't actually care about persuading and all you care about is going into attack mode to feel or look like the good guy. Yes, I get that there are some SJWs that are extreme *******s and I agree with most of what you said there but I honestly dont get that part at the end where you feel like you can tell they are only doing for some kind of hero complex but don't really care. It's like you are trying to be a mind reader and saying they don't really care based off of some arbitrary criteria that you come up with. Also, I don't feel like you were attacking me until you mentioned me specifically about the gender conversation.

I wasn't persuading but trying to give you some information about it to help you better understand but obviously the two ladies did a better job. Also you are still caught up on that attack helicopter joke? Most people that are on the anti PC side don't really care about being educated and getting more info. They just stick to their opinion and toss off slippery slope examples that make completely no sense. It is the same like when people that are against same sex marriage saying whats next being able to marry your dog? They just minimize people's experience because they don't understand it and don't want to understand it. You definitely came off like one of those types when you first started the gender conversation. Being super defensive of your way of thinking and not being open to the other side much.

Tell me why a statue or a holiday change means anything that isn't superficial.

You can tell. By their actions. I pointed it out. They are the ones to talk the most **** and rally behind fake causes. It's all for ego. It's all for perception. That's not mind reading that's just common sense. It's obvious. Something we both know people do in every culture. Act fake as ****. Kind of weird that I don't remember you saying any of this in my record yourself giving to the less fortunate thread.

You weren't trying to persuade me, but were trying to give me information to better understand? I'm sorry, I must have been full of ****. You were not trying to persuade me, you were just giving information so I'd better understand. Cause that in no way is persuading. But the ironic thing about that is, you literally gave me zero information. If I remember right, you told me just to identify people as what they want because it's rude not to. That is not giving me information, it's not meant to help me understand, it's trying to tell me, or persuade me, to do something. And you don't see the irony in saying that the others don't care about understanding things and try to minimize people's experience? As people actively try to minimize my experience with out giving a damn about understanding me when I say ejaculating in somebody's mouth during consensual sex is not rape? Or that I have a hard time identifying somebody's gender if it contradicts their sex? Or that I think racism towards whites matters just as much as racism towards minorities? Or that race relations and problems vary in different locations? There are various things that I get completely dismissed or heckled for saying with out anybody caring to understand or hear me out. Like Bulbasaur telling me I'm just trying to play victim and just want attention or something when I speak my mind. Or elph going off and saying that reverse racism is something made up by whiny white dudes. Or you saying I'm just looking for reasons to complain about liberals. Trying to invalidate what I have to say because it contradicts what you believe. So it's not just anti PC people that do it. And if you really think somebody is a lost cause or complete brick wall, then you're better off not interacting with them at all. The reason I typically try to avoid these threads personally. I'm obviously not good at that though.

Edit: Despite calling specific people out, I do have to say that at least these discussions are a lot more civil here than they are on my main forum. It's devolved to death threats, thread spamming and personal insults on almost every other thread.
