This is a very disingenuous and stereotypical depiction of depression.

Plenty of people are extremely productive while being depressed.

People even have moments of happiness when they are depressed.

A lot of depressed people don't like showing it because they don't think they are worth worrying about, or they don't want to be made uncomfortable addressing it, or they just don't want to talk to people that don't understand telling them to just get over it.

It’s actually very problematic that depression is pretty much self-diagnosed. It’s also a catchall diagnosis when the doctor doesn’t know wtf is going on. Before anyone is diagnosed with a mental disorder they should be given a goddamn brain scan. The way it goes now you go to the doctor and describe your symptoms and fill out some moronic questionnaire and then get drugs X, Y, and Z. If they think your arm is broken they take a ****ing x-ray. It is as if even the medical community still thinks emotions have non-physiological causes like it’s mysticism instead of brain chemistry. And what’s even more obscene is therapists in general usually know absolutely nothing about neurology. Often they believe that mental illness doesn’t have to be neurological. That’s as stupid as saying if the patient thinks his arm is broken then it’s definitely really broken.

I agree with your point on it being a catchall diagnosis, Hawk. I don't like it because I think it makes people who don't suffer from mental health problems feel that it isn't real because to them it seems like everyone is being diagnosed with it. Probably a lot of people who have been diagnosed with depression have something more specific that hasn't been picked up on.

Yeah tbh I tend to be gate-keepy about self vs medical diagnoses

Not quite sure what you’re saying.

in essence i just don't take self diagnosis as seriously as medical diagnosis. it's a problematic viewpoint because of the issue of access to medical care but in the age of tumblr everyone has something. idk at the end of the day it doesn't matter or effect my life but i roll my eyes when someone tells me they have ocd and has never once been to see a psychiatrist.
