My sister just called me today about my mom's drinking. We're trying to figure out how to approach it. She's 60.

Hate not being drunk? You're at the beginning of this ride. It's only going to get harder.

I wish I could have talked to my Mom about her drinking, but I was in a downward spiral myself at the time. Booze and pills sent her into a Grand Mal seizure and she went into a coma, only to come out of it weeks later with the cognitive abilities of a 3 month old. This was our life for 13 years. Taking care of her until she passed away peacefully. I gotta give my Step-Dad a lot of credit for just being there for her around the clock through the entire thing. My brother too.

In the same position as you except my sister is a massive boozer as well. My mom is the most stubborn person in the world so she won't listen to anyone.

Think you know you need to stop Elph, hopefully you manage to do it before you completely destroy yourself.

I appreciate that my friend.

My daughter only got to meet her real self once, and that was a week before it happened and 2 months after she was born. One of the hardest things still is knowing what a great Grandmother she would have made if only she'd have put down the sauce and pills. Once in a great while, in her altered post coma state, I could see in her eyes as she looked at her granddaughter that she knew that she was a part of her.

I've grown past it, but there's still a part of me that hurts. Always will.

That's really tough on you both, Fluff and Plankton. That kind of long term care/toleration must be terrible to maintain day after day.

Grandparents enjoy their grandchildren in the movies, but it doesn't always work out that way: my son, for example, never met his Brit grandparents.

I don't tell much of the things I've gone through mostly because that's all in the past and I've come through the other side a little wiser and a lot is really personal, but if I think there's a chance someone will get something out of it, I'll post up a bit of the story. Enough to get the picture anyway. Sometimes I ramble though.

Just trying to help others.

I do appreciate that though, Marie. Thank you.

Back to your regularly scheduled program...

Holy god that's awful. I can't imagine doing that for 13 years.

That's rough plank, I'm sorry. I couldnt do it.

My bf's mom got hooked on pills after surgery then went all-in on booze and ended up homeless, ultimately dying of "wet brain." It's a horrible thing for a child to witness of their parent.
