So for example its:

I'm not very good at maths.

If I said:

I'm not very good at math (people here might think I had a speech impediment)

Btw why can't I edit my previous post, as it's written in bad Englishs.

We say Englishs because it covers multiple disciplines.

Language, literature etc. So those three and more. I did well at Englishs.

Less so at Maths though.

I'll put it down to cultural differences.
It's so hard to tell when people are trying to be funny here though. Like if you don't get a joke that someone made, then that person will get all offended and moan that "IT WAS A JOKE, NO ONE GETS MY JOKES HERE " and all that. Then if you laugh at something you think is a joke and then it's not, they get all butthurt about that too. Just what I've seen here.

I think maybe she feels that she has to be careful about what she posts here or how she reacts to things, as if walking on eggshells. Trust me, it's not like that in real life. She is very funny and witty and one of those people that you'd like to be around all the time. I don't think it's cultural differences.

I thought that was a joke too when I read it. It's not? I think that song is older than Kate Upton so it doesn't make sense. See what I mean about joke detection on this website?

You sure about that mate? I think you need to take another look. It's kind of like Where's Waldo, but very thinly veiled.

Three quick comments, if I may:-

* Yep, I`d say maths too, the same way I`d say physics. Another word that looks plural but works like singular is the news; "The news is bad, I`m afraid."

* I really appreciate the positive mention, Urban. Thanks . The comments you made about other members were very fair, very perceptive too imo. This is borne out by the fact that your post didn`t generate the kind of ten-page wrangling that this thread is notorious for!

* Like almost everyone here these days, Taxman is a friendly guy ready to share his opinions and chat. I for one will be sorry if he leaves us. What`s up,Taxman? If you`re happy here, why not hang around?

I don't think it's about not being happy here. It seems like he is dealing with a lot emotionally in his personal life lately so maybe he's taking some time away to deal with that.

Also, if you want to do that with English it would be Englishes. Please don't forget the "e" at the end....

But English is one singular word. You don't hear people say "The Englishs Queen" or "The Englishs team". That's just taking it too far. As far as we on this side of the pond are concerned, it's maths. You can all keep your math: it's not a singular word. Also, I hated maths (!) at school, one of the reasons I got out early.

Well it's an abbreviation so by definition you're going to be leaving letters out. Why not leave out the S, especially since the word is treated as singular in terms of grammar?

I think this sums up the Math vs Maths arg. pretty well:

Quote:
Math and maths are equally acceptable abbreviations of mathematics. The only difference is that math is preferred in the U.S. and Canada, and maths is preferred in the U.K., Australia, and most other English-speaking areas of the world.

Neither abbreviation is correct or incorrect. You may hear arguments for one being superior to the other, and there are logical cases for both sides. One could argue maths is better because mathematics ends in s, and one could argue math is better because mathematics is just a mass noun that happens to end in s. In any case, English usage is rarely guided by logic, and these usage idiosyncrasies are often arbitrary. If you were raised in a part of the world where people say maths, then maths is correct for you, and the same is of course true of math. Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.
