i should take a typing class.

mercer808 07-04-2013 12:00 PM

When Earl tries to write lyrics that are more poignant and less focused on rape and misogyny, I truly believe he is one of the best lyricists out right now. Not to mention being young as ****. Also, Frank Ocean's ambient, emotion pouring channel ORANGE is a beautiful album with a hazy middle range, powerful high ranges, and features from artists such as Andre 3000 and the aforementioned Earl Sweatshirt. Tyler, the Creator is a talented producer. His rapping ability is dismal, but he finds a way to make it unique enough that it's interesting. He is also a marketing king. I like Odd Future. I truly believe they are the future of hip hop, and possibly music.

Surell 07-07-2013 03:09 PM

I still like Tyler's style, but sometimes he stretches himself or just says some pretty whack shit, I'll admit. But I like that his rap usually looks at a big picture, or that his ideas are really complex, they just need better articulation from time to time.

Goofle 07-07-2013 03:14 PM

The start of his newest album is great. I am sure there is a masterpiece in there... somewhere.

Surell 07-07-2013 03:33 PM

It's got a lot of great tracks, and if he entirely ditched the concept it could have made a great mixtape. It's an interesting concept of course, but it has very little bearing on too many of the songs. I like the ending tracks too, the last track is one of my very favorites of his.

anticipation 07-10-2013 11:59 PM

I really enjoyed Wolf on first listen.

Surell 07-12-2013 10:05 AM

Then what happened?

Thom Yorke 07-16-2013 12:39 AM

SGR 07-16-2013 04:58 AM

Wolf is one of the best hip-hop albums of the year so far in my opinion. The way it flows is impeccable. So natural and smooth and the dynamics shift very often and in a way that isn't abrasive and annoying.

Circe 07-16-2013 02:32 PM

I love Earl's new track, seriously. I figured I wouldn't really be giving OF too much attention any more but if DORIS is as good as the stuff he's put out for it so far I imagine I'll be listening to it a lot.

Thom Yorke 07-17-2013 02:25 PM

Yeah, Earl's album looks pretty promising. Vince Staples sort of ruins that track a bit though IMO.

Thom Yorke 08-06-2013 09:06 AM

Haven't been looking forward to a hip hop album this much in a while. Particularly interested to hear the full "Burgundy".

Here's the full thing:

SGR 08-10-2013 05:54 AM

So 10 days till this thing drops. Let's play "Predict the Pitchfork Rating"! I'm going with 7.1 ;)

Sparky 08-10-2013 09:08 AM

i didn't know it was coming so soon, it should probably leak anytime then

i think pf gives it 9.1

Sparky 08-10-2013 09:45 AM

the supposed doom collaboration is titillating
"your mom's an asshole" lol

butthead aka 216 08-10-2013 05:08 PM

i dont have high expectations, that burgundy song is so off beat and theres just no substance to it

14232949 08-10-2013 05:34 PM

who cares about Earl Sweatshirt, Pusha T's dropping his album later this year.
Forget Pitchfork. Forgot Earl and that prick Tyler the Creator. Forget Odd Future.
It's all about this

Sparky 08-11-2013 12:47 PM

yall tripping

pusha t has had the same flow for 10+ years; gets by on his image

14232949 08-11-2013 12:49 PM

Odd Future are getting by on the fact that there is a large demographic of hipsters polluting rap music at the moment. They won't get 10 years out of their careers. Pusha must be doing something right.

Sparky 08-11-2013 12:59 PM

haha right because it wasn't the collective effort of the pitchfork hipster base that revitalized pusha's career. A career that really only has pharells production to show for it.

Dude gets by because he looks cool, he's extremely limited

You act like that's a bad thing though. His flow works for him and he has the lyrical prowess to pull it off.

Sparky 08-11-2013 01:16 PM

no doubt and i like pusha a lot, numbers on the boards bangs.

I just took offence to showcasing pusha over earl. Pusha, "you hear the egchk and you know its me" lol. He says egchk in like every verse.

butthead aka 216 08-12-2013 05:39 AM

pusha t taught me everythin there is to know about coke slang lol

like him way more than early

actully thought early was gonna separate himself talent wise from odd future when i first heard him a few yrs back. i know there was that thing where he was livin in somalio or some place weird like samoa or whatever cause his mom mad ehim i think. but my point is that as of today i dont think he is gonna separate much from the other guys

14232949 08-12-2013 06:52 AM

Yeah, he's got a spark about him. No doubt. But he needs to separate himself from Tyler the Creator who's just holding him back.
EARL needs to break away and write his own stuff, none of this raping, or setting things on fire or golfwang bullshit. He's got a good flow and understands rhyme structure, he just needs someone behind him that'll let him grow as an artist than someone as immature as Tyler who restricts him and is a negative influence on him.

Aside from Tyler, who I'll give him his props is a decent producer, and Frank Ocean everyone other than EARL in OF is completely useless so EARL associating himself with them is giving him no dividends. I reckon if he cuts ties with the lot of them, moves away from being Tyler the Creator's wingman and gets a production team/co-writers of decent level behind him, he can be a pretty good MC.

Circe 08-12-2013 08:21 AM

Earl's outright said that he's not going to include the old rape & pillage lyrics in his tracks any more and everything he's released from Doris so far doesn't include it so I guess your wish is granted.

LoathsomePete 08-12-2013 10:53 AM

I'm glad for that, I actually really enjoyed his song "Chum", enough so to edit my "Best of 2012" mix to include it, so I'm glad he's growing up as an artist.

14232949 08-12-2013 11:36 AM

I mean his record EARL showed glimpses of potential, but the contrived content and the constant interference of Tyler dampened it for me.
I don't wanna hear all that bullshit about fictitious rapes from someone who was like 16 at the time, that's clearly Tyler's influence. But you can hear this nigga can actually rap he just needs to figure out what he's gonna rap about. All of Odd Future do.

FrigginParadox 08-13-2013 11:04 AM

Dont get it twisted i do like Earl but there is something about him that dosnt let me like him as much as i could. And i do think its the affiliation with OF. I do feel it holds him back in a sense. I mean now with Dorris he seems to have steered away, but there is still something about it.

Circe 08-15-2013 03:20 AM

Doris has leaked. I'm not far into it yet but it's damn good so far.

Thom Yorke 08-15-2013 06:27 AM

Yeah, it's excellent. I had heard half of the album before anyways, but the tracks that I hadn't heard are great as well. Really liked Molasses in particular. Pre and Vince Staples are really the only things I don't like about this album. Earl seems to really outshine all of the features on here, which is fine. Really consistent effort (both from Earl and the production) from start to finish, and easily the best thing that has come out from anyone from Odd Future.

Circe 08-15-2013 07:11 AM

You don't like Vince on it? I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by his performance as well as Domo's. I've always thought of the two as kind of crap but I felt they added quite a lot to the tracks they turned up on.

FrigginParadox 08-15-2013 10:51 AM

oooh it leaked? i gotta find it asap!

Circe 08-15-2013 11:32 AM

I have a stream available but I'm not familiar enough with this board's policy towards them to know if it's okay to post one publicly or not.
