Tyler, the Creator

Just discovered this dude. Really good. 19 year old emcee/producer. Has a great ear for beats and doesn't sample, his rhyming is tight too.

I actually just heard about this kid a few days ago.
He is retty good, though.

Phantom Limb 11-09-2010 12:19 PM

Upon reviewing this album, I think that he is ok not great. A lot of the songs revolve around rape and I'm not sure why, and the beats don't have much variety. That said, the beats are tight and he's a good rapper. It's worth at least one spin.

Sparky 11-09-2010 12:39 PM

As a whole, i think the production is really good. It's a distinct sound, and i think the rape lyrics is pretty fun dark humour. Dude is a horny 17 year old, sex is on his brain.

He's gonna blow up big time.

Phantom Limb 11-11-2010 11:14 AM

I think the album goes a little bit far to be considered "pretty fun dark humour". Have you listened to the song where he talks about ****ing a dead chick? It's just going a little too far. I feel like I would be ok with it if it was a passing reference, but it seems like a major theme in this album.

Sparky 11-11-2010 02:47 PM

Subject matter has never really bothered me in music. It's not like you can take it seriously, and as long as it's done in an interesting way (as oppose to something like ICP)i can usually get into it.

sleepy jack 12-25-2010 11:31 AM

I like how when Eminem sings about the stuff he does it's just him being "over the top" to "make a point" and people glorified the early albums for it. Hell, I often hear Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique praised for it's lyrics. I don't have a problem with the lyrics, I thought the track Sarah was hilarious for instance, probably because prom sucked for me in high school.

Anyway the whole Odd Future collective basically blows my mind and makes me feel lazy (though they kind of have this Jay Reatard/Ryan Adams thing going on and I think they need someone to tell them they don't have to release everything they do...because some of it doesn't need to be released.) Tyler, the Creator is definitely the best out of the group though (followed by Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy Beats, who also released some great albums this year.) The production is particularly interesting, because there seems to be a lot going on like you have these moments where it's very dark and other times light, and distorted and it's just, I don't know, it kept me interested.

Earl Sweatshirt "Earl" (2010)

first album..

Earl Sweatshirt "Earl" (2010"
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Gds2OpjVXL...+EARL+2010.jpg

More of a rough demo than an album, 16 year old Earl Sweatshirt delivers a sick, funny and creative release (produced by Tyler, the Creator, also of Odd Future fame.) Many people have called him (and his Odd Future brethren) the future of hip hop, and with such talent at such a young age it's easy to see why.

Dr.Seussicide 01-06-2011 12:26 PM

Love it, refreshingly gritty, we need more hip hop like this.

James 01-06-2011 12:28 PM

On my first listen now and loving it. Heard he was sent to bootcamp shortly after the albums release, hearing these lyrics I see the logic lol. Tyler The Creator is better imo, but this kid has potential.

Dr.Seussicide 01-06-2011 12:31 PM

Tyler's my favourite as well, fucking love his verses in everything. Splatter is phenomenal.

sleepy jack 01-06-2011 12:47 PM

Tyler is definitely the most talented member of OFWGKTA, but I'd say Earl is still really talented and comes in close second. Hodgy Beats is probably third for me. I kind of want to review their mixtape Radical later on in this club.

Mrd00d 01-06-2011 09:10 PM

I was fairly convinced I wouldn't enjoy what I heard, but was actually surprised to find otherwise. I really like Earl's skilled flow and I do hope he will still be able to rap so well after he's matured a little bit. The lyrics weren't bad, but as one review I read while looking up the album said: "It comes off as sophomoric at times, but he was 16 at the time of recording... so that just makes sense".

I recommend Stapleton, Pigions, Earl, and Kill. The beat on Stapleton really exemplifies what I mean about the interesting production. I think it's very experimental. The same can be said about a lot of the beats. Almost dubstep-like.

I'm lookin forward to checkin out Tyler, the Creator...

taylorgangordie 01-06-2011 09:48 PM

I'm about to check this out. I heard it was good, and I like Tyler the Creator's stuff..and I know Earl is a better rapper than Tyler..so I'm optimistic.

Dirty 01-06-2011 09:49 PM

Amazing flow and rhyming skills. Can't believe he's only 16 with the creative rhyme schemes he is throwing together. A lot of great sets of lines too. Favorite song is definitely "Kill" by far... Too much rape stuff though, same with Tyler. I guess they don't have anything else to write about, but I'm just not feelin all the rape rapping. For their age this is good stuff, but if they were a few years older this wouldn't be that impressive so I wanna see how they progress as they get older. A lot of good rhymes in there but just such a repetitive subject of rape and I can't dig it all that much.

Anyone else feel like they could hear some influences in there? I was just listen and at different points I heard a little Eminem influence and some MF Doom. Not like throughout all the songs or anything but just at different moments that kinda popped into my head. Wasn't sure if anyone else heard hints of influences by certain dudes or not.

taylorgangordie 01-06-2011 10:13 PM

I definitely can feel an Eminem influence. It sounds like some of the angry music Eminem made when he was younger. I'm sure he'll grow out of making every song angry, but his flow and delivery is nearly impeccable.

I'm hearing MF DOOM and Kool Keith (Doc Oc) kinds of influences.

But I think I did hear him say he was listinening to Eminem and his lady was listening to Blueprint. Cool. He listens to that gritty Eminem ****, but he still respects the lyrical, poetic aspects that folks like Print are all about.

His skit tracks reminded me of a more juvenile, black Eminem. They were bearable.

djchameleon 01-06-2011 11:31 PM

Yeah I loved his delivery and his flow but if he keeps down this same path with the lyrical content , he'll probably end up doing mostly horrorcore rap

Phantom Limb 01-07-2011 11:16 AM

I think that the OF gang will either stop talking about rape so much, or people will get bored. You have to have the right mindset when you start into this album. Anyway, it's fun to listen to this album as long as you don't listen to it too much.

Wha? :'(

Dr.Seussicide 01-07-2011 11:28 AM

Yeah Jansz, what?

But, on another note, does anyone feel like they kind of remind you of D12? I swear when I heard Turnt Down by Hodgy Beat, all I could think of was Bizarre. It's just that they have more members, obviously, but I kind of came up with that comparison while listening to Radical.

If godawful means dope fresh.

Bastard is easily the worst album, of any genre, that I've heard in the past year. Are you saying maybe he has newer stuff that's less awful?

No, Bastard is his only album. But I think it's brilliant.

Dr.Seussicide 01-07-2011 11:31 AM

Listen to this Jansz:

I must say I find that pretty astonishing. What is it that you like about it? For me it failed on every possible level.

Phantom Limb 01-07-2011 11:37 AM

Do you not like the production or the rapping?

Boring music? Check. Generic rapping? Check. Piss poor lyrics? Check.

Yep, this song is a good example of why I don't like him.

I think the production on the album is unreal. And as well as that the guy isn't afraid to say anything, he's willing to take risks and although a lot of his raps are a bit below the belt, a lot of the time they are very witty and amusing.

I listen to it and I don't hear risk-taking at all, just dullness.

Dr.Seussicide 01-07-2011 11:41 AM

So then, what kind of rap do you like?

Maybe you should give the Earl album a try. The production is the same and they both have similiar lyrics but the rapping and the general style is different.

Phantom Limb 01-07-2011 11:44 AM

YouTube - Tyler , The Creator - Seven

YouTube - Kill

The second one is Earl.

I think its a little bit harsh to say that the rapping is generic. It's more of an acquired taste.

Jester 01-07-2011 11:44 AM

If he didn't like Tyler's album, I really doubt he'd like Earl's.

Worth a try, then we could at least get a little bit of conflicting opinion and here that'll generate discussion. 10 people saying "it's good" isn't as interesting.

Dirty 01-07-2011 11:49 AM

The more I listen, the more I'm just turned off by the lyrical content of Tyler, and a lot of Earl. I don't really see it as risk-taking or daring. I mean, he's got this broad subject of rape/doing crazy stuff so he has unlimited things to rhyme. I don't know, this whole horrorcore rap thing just really isn't my style at all. A lot of respect to the flow and rhyme schemes and there are a good amount of great lines, but just the subject matter and stuff turns me off from it

James 01-07-2011 11:50 AM

Earl is 16 and Tyler is 18. The lyrics are very immature.
