The only person to completely loathe a lead singer and then biff that band into his top 3.

28. BLACK SABBATH - VOLUME 4 (1972)

When I listen to an album I like it to have different textures & shades. For example if someone like Thom Yorke lets out a blood curdling scream in one of his songs it sounds more shocking & is more effective than when someone for example like Lee Dorian of Napalm Death does it , because he does it all the time in every song which to me makes it lose it`s effectiveness.Thats pretty much how I feel about the first 3 Black Sabbath albums.Don`t get me wrong I love them all, however there`s only so many doom laden songs you can hear in one sitting & there`s nothing really on those albums to break it all up & make those songs feel more effective.Which is why I think Volume 4 is Sabbaths best album (Although it was close between this & Sabotage)The heavy doomy stuff is on here but there`s also lighter stuff like Laguna Sunrise & Changes(before Ozzy & Kelly Osbourne decided to take a huge fat dump on it) to change the mood & give a wider range of texture to the music.Having said that this album contains some of my favourite Sabbath songs they ever recorded. You have the almost but not quite psychadelia of Wheels Of Confusion , one of my favourite album openers ever , which leads into the slow burning Tomorrows Dream which just gets better & better the longer you listen to it.But the real highlight for me of this album is Supernaut , in my opinion Sabbaths best song EVER.You want what this album does to be summed up in one tiny interlude ? OK then , during the middle of this song it breaks down & goes into the bit with the drums & the latino style acoustic guitars , so you listening to that tapping your feet along to it then all of a sudden (At 3mins 18 seconds into the song) BANG !!!! The main riff crashes back in & you`re off again. That one moment played at full volume has got to be better than any orgasm. And thats just one reason why I love this album so much.

Favourite Songs - Wheels Of Confusion , Tomorrows Dream , Supernaut , Under The Sun

27. THE SMITHS - MEAT IS MURDER (1985)

Hmmm The Smiths , I probably got into the Smiths quite late compaired to your average indie fan.It wasn`t that I hated them , It was more I was bored of people saying how great they were all the time.If i`m honest I would have much rather listened to the Cure or Echo & The Bunnymen if I was going to listen to 80s music. But once i`d got over irritating know it all students boring me to death over the genius of Morrissey & every single talentless hack music journalist raving about them 10 years after they`d split up I decided to listen to them with an open mind , and actually discovered they really wern`t that bad at all , if still a tad overrated. The reason I like this album over their debut or even The Queen Is Dead is because this album doesn`t really suffer from the same overexposure as those 2 albu,s.There`s some really good songs tucked away on this record that seem to get overlooked. The album opener The Headmasters Ritual is probably in my top 5 favourite Smiths songs yet i`ve hardly ever heard it mentioned in the same was that songs from The Queen Is Dead are.One thing I like about this album is the way it`s different to the Smiths usual albums. It`s like after their first album they wanted to do a few things a little different which they tried on this one and then went back to what they did before on their following albums , so you end up with oddities such as Rusholme Ruffians & the title track which sound unlike anything they did after.Plus you have the ultimate Smiths track of all time ... How Soon Is Now.

Favourite Songs - The Headmasters Ritual , I Want The One I Can`t Have , That Joke Isn`t Funny Anymore, How Soon Is Now

26. OASIS - DEFINITELY MAYBE (1994)

No matter how uncool it becomes to say so I will always stick my head out & say I love Oasis.
OK so they`ve done nothing of note since Whats The Story Morning Glory , but if you weren`t around in 1993 it`s impossible to describe how much of a breath of fresh air this band were. From the first moment I heard Supersonic I was hooked on this band , I was counting the days down until this album came out.And when it did , it was just as great as i`d hoped. It was so refreshing to see 5 working class lads get up there , kick up a fuss and not give a flying f*ck what the indie press thought of them and make some f*cking great music in the process. If you want a best of Oasis album you may as well get this one because there is not a duff track on it.How many other bands could steal a riff from a T Rex song and improve on it.I don`t care if they sound like The Beatles , I`ve heard Oasis do 'I Am The Walrus' , and you know something? It`s 100 times better than the Beatles version ever was. This album takes all the best bits from British music from the 60s & 70s & gives it a 90s attitude.
From obscurity to Knebworth in 2 years , suck on that Arctic Monkeys

Favourite Songs - Supersonic , Live Forever , Cigarettes & Alcohol, Columbia

25. MANIC STREET PREACHERS - THE HOLY BIBLE (1994)

Now where the f*ck did this come from. I mean seriously this is dark. The last thing I was expecting from a band who`s first album sounded like some amateurish clumsy Guns N Roses/New York Dolls amalgamation with a bunch of of ham fisted second hand political ideologies stolen from The Clash. The second album wasn`t much better either,as if they`d seen the success of Motorcycle Emptiness & Suicide Is Painless & decided to take the easy route of making an album of radio friendly pop/rock songs. So when this came out to say I was surprised was an understatement. It took me a while to get into it, almost a year in fact. But the length of time it took it get into it just made it better , like stripping away layer by layer. It`s almost like going into Richie Edwards own personal inferno. Ah yes Richie Edwards , the driving force behind this album , you just gotta look at the manics now.So he wasn`t a musician and mimed when they played live , so f*cking what , look what happened as soon as he was gone. They turned old & fat making pedestrian radio friendly middle of the road populist junk that would make the stereophonics die of embarassment. Wherever Richie Edwards is he`s probably better off out of it altogether.

Favourite Songs - Of Walking Abortion , Archives Of Pain , 4st 7lbs , Mausoleum
