Default a push in the right direction

Hello!

I'm not a huge fan of electronica, but I have heard songs with very catchy melodies and awesome ambient sounds...which makes me want to explore the genre a bit.

The type of elements I'm looking for are that of strong melody, and interesting sounds that create a sort of 'spacey' atmosphere (I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan). I'm looking for a new sound that takes you on a mental journey.

Things I'd like to avoid, however, are the typical repetitive dance club songs...like an 8 minute drum beat that never changes...*boom-ch-boom-ch-boom-ch-boom-ch* Also, nothing hip-hop flavored.

Does anybody have some suggestions? Thanks in advance!

^ check out daft punk, they are my favorite 'electronica' music. 3 good cd's to choose from. to me they are exactly what that style of music should sound like.

The double CD release from Cream (the club) Entitled FUTURE CHILL, is a perfect representation of what you are looking for, especially disc 2.

jgd85-I personally would'nt agree. I like DAFT PUNK, but there are generally more suited to a pre club atmosphere, and are too bass heavy to be ambient.

I have this album (Future Chill) , if you want it upped.

i understand, i just recommend anyone who sort of likes electronica to test the waters with daft punk. they really got me to start looking at the style of music with a different appreciation. i haven't heard of 'future chill' but i will definitely check it out.

I wonder if Vineyard Rose, with her four posts, is still lurking on MB? If so, your patience has been rewarded, VR! Your thread is suddenly in the spotlight because of http://www.musicbanter.com/games-lis...litz-game.html

Who will be the first (after Joyboyo, jackhammer and Gravity Slips) to give Rose "a push in the right direction"? I presume there have been a couple of electronica releases in the ten years since those guys posted - so which albums/groups fit Rose's description?

I have absolutely no good recommendations for following the exact guidelines of this request, but jackhammer's response gives some good chillout and downtempo type stuff which I know a bit about.

I quite like this whole album, pretty damn laid back and spacey:

I guess it depends on what the OP means by electronia. I mean, Depeche Mode could be considered electronica though I'm sure that's not what the OP had in mind.

I guess getting close to electronica though, I'd go with Eno, Ultravox, and maybe Stereolab.
