There is quite a few songs which are better than "Teardrop" on that album. For me, 'Angel' is on a differant level.
I love the way 'Angel' was captured live at Abbey Road it is superb: YouTube - Massive Attack - Angel ( Live From Abbey Road) |
What do you guys think of their second album, Protection and the remix album, No Protection?
|
Not heard it, but I was rocking to Mezzanine yesterday. Five star album.

I haven't checked out the remix album. Is it the one by Mad Professor? Should I check it out? I like Massive Attack. They're the band that got me into trip-hop. I especially like Mezzanine, with it's dark, heavy, distorted sound. |

Have you's heard Zed's ded's remix of Paradise Circus? It's rather sleazy.
|
anybody here like me also think their best album is "Mezzanine"?
|
Teardrop is an awesome song to get initiated into Massive Attack, and will probably be their signature song forever. But as the others have said, do not ignore their other material.

I'd actually be on the fence with that one. In terms of just being well made Mezz is top by far but Blue Lines has Tricky and Heligoland is probably their most entertaining for me to listen to.

Any of the first three Massive Attack albums are good. Blue Lines is my personal fav, finally saw them a few years ago, they hadn't been to Vancouver Canada since 1995!!!.....that was a long wait.
|
I'd have to say Mezzanine, although Blue Lines cuts a close second. I think Angel just tips it for Mezzanine, quality song.
|
The only Massive Attack worth listening to is the stuff with Tricky, and maybe Mezzanine. I prefer Tricky's solo work to anything Post-Tricky from Massive Attack. In fact, I just listened to Maxinquaye.

Mezzanine is the absolute shit. Damn near perfection.
|
have to give it a better listen I guess.
|
I must be trippin', Mezzanine is maybe better than anything Tricky's ever done. Maxinque and Blue Lines included.

I had not heard half of it until now, and I have always thought Teardrop was fantastic. Vastly different from the jazzy hip-hop they did before, but it really worked.
|
Ahh, I misunderstood your earlier posts. I think my comments still hold true in general though :D

Tricky fell off a bit, I think. Maxinquaye, Nearly God and (parts of) Pre Millennium Tension were all great, but I think his later stuff misses something. It's good he tries to do new things, though.
As for Massive Attack, I've been listening a lot to Heligoland lately, and I think it's pretty strong. At first, I thought it was ok, but now I find it pretty enjoyable. "Flat of the Blade" amazes me. |

I think his latest album, "Mixed Race", actually is kind of good, though. Not perfect, of course, but still pretty cool at some points, with tracks like "UK Jamaican" and "Murder Weapon". |

Hmmm, I'll have to check it out, cheers. |
massive attack is real... they feel what they're doin'. love them.
|
I actually loved "What Your Soul Sings" from 100th Window, and "Better Things" from Protection. This could be because they were the first Massive Attack songs I heard. And, to make matters more complicated, the first time I heard Teardrop was its remixed version from the onelove smash your stereo remix from 2009. Weirdnesssssss. When I realized it was a remix, I didn't even believe it. Who would even remix Massive Attack, they are so good on their own!
|
I had quite a problem getting into anything more than the album Mezzanine. It was the first one to be heard by me and it really impressed me with its gloomy atmosphere. After that I tried Blue Lines and Protection. After first disappointment I finally managed to like these CDs somehow, but it wasn't what I had expected after hearing Mezzanine. I know that for many Massive Attack fans it isn't Mezzanine which is the best, it is just the most popular one, but it is this bleak sense of a musty attic in the night that made me absolutely love it.

Great band, haven't heard nuthing from them lately though.Their 90's tracks are a classic, love safe from harm, unfinished sympathy, hymn of the big wheel, just amazing trip hop music.
|
great blue lines
|
I do like some of their stuff. Teardrop is my fave, mostly because I'm a big Liz Fraser fan and her vocal on this is great.
|
Definitely one of the most important groups to me.
Y'all hear this track from a few years back? What did you think? |
This is one of my favourite tracks of all time..

Fantastic discography and a great influence on me. I have 3 cds - Blue Lines, Protection and Mezzanine.
I think the peak of production, atmosphere and overall feeling of a single track belongs to "Group Four" from the album Mezzanine. |
Will have to check it out. Love that album/the atmosphere.
