Aphex Twin

Which Aphex Twin album is the best?
Also, who are some good Intelligent Techno artists?,
and who has heard Big Black's cover of "Model" off Man-Machine?

Imonlydancing 08-10-2005 04:06 AM

Aphex Twin seems to go from works of genius to total unlistenable bollocks

TheBig3 08-10-2005 07:20 PM

I heard some song with a Didjeredoo (sp) in it, and it was cool for the novelty but I would never throw it on a mix

I think 1% is an EP or mini-album. I definitely have never seen it in stores. Aphex Twin's early ambient techno (Selected Ambient Works 85-92) is very good and like nothing else heard before when it came out. I like his new drill'n'bass/hardcore breakbeat stuff too. The new 26 Mixes For Cash is really wicked. Weak points (in my opinion) are Selected Ambient Works II which is mostly lengthy and downright boring pieces, and Drukqs, which is a double-disc set of brief and weird songs. Definitely pick up the Come To Daddy EP, as that is his most well-known song. Right now I believe Richard D. James (the Aphex Twin) is doing a set of 11 EPs called Analord, which are a throwback to the old-skool acid techno sound (like Didgeridoo II I guess).
Just in case anybody wanted to know.

IDM is my favourite. I'm . . . getting excited. I'll just name some stuff I know.
Autechre, Orbital, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, mu-Ziq, Luke Slater, Global Communication, ect. This ranges from beautiful melodic beats to jazz-influenced drill'n'bass, to pummeling drums, and so on. IDM is weird because you never know what it will sound like.

Agreed he can make the most beautiful music and then make something unlistenable

omgwtf 01-22-2006 10:32 AM

Richard D. James is a ****ing genius, absolutely amazing at what he does. I own "Drukqs", "Selected Ambient Works Vol. I and II", "Richard D. James Album", "26 Mixes For Cash" and "I Care Because You Do". Honestly, I don't ever think I've heard a bad track on any of them. I must admit, I'm not too keen on 'I Care Because You Do', but, my favourite album from Aphex is probably 'Drukqs'. Fantastic record.

IndiElectronica 01-24-2006 06:29 AM

yeah - he's a genius.. but he's also a wanker and does make some absolute rubbish as well... gotta take the good with bad with him.... i just got all his EPS (and i mean ALL) and there is some absolutely DIRE stuff in there...

Revolver 03-29-2006 03:48 PM

I am a huge Aphex Twin fan, I own all of his albums. His music never gets old.

crow t robot 03-30-2006 02:42 PM

I have 11 Aphex Twin cd's counting a Polygon Window EP and they're all great! I like the Richard D. James Album best I think. He creates the weirdest and most beautiful sounds..

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 I would have to say is one of my favorites.

vmixer 04-14-2006 10:26 AM

What was that video they did that scared the hell out of me? The one were some freaky things are screaming super loud in grandma's face? <gulp>

crow t robot 04-16-2006 06:35 PM

that would be "Come To Daddy" directed by Chris Cunningham...

That pretty much sums it up.

Not to mention the hellish pretentious album titles like "Selected Ambient Works". Awful.

Slowhand 04-19-2006 09:24 PM

26 Mixes For Cash is pretty cool, as is the Windowlicker E.P.

swim 04-29-2006 04:36 PM

joe_ashworth 08-04-2006 08:56 AM

I currently have an obsession with Drukqs.

crow t robot 08-04-2006 05:00 PM

Have you heard the new AFX Analord compilation, Chosen Lords? It's definitely worth picking up if you're a Richard D. James fan...Sounds like some of the older stuff from SAW..

jonmarshall 08-20-2006 03:58 AM

when writing music which is so off the wall and round the world 6 times, like richard d james does then there is bound to be some **** in there. however he has created some really f*cked up sounds and beats and samples over the years and he is certain to amaze.

Alo 08-20-2006 04:22 AM

Not really into them.

shemightbelinzy 08-27-2006 09:45 PM

Spike*Spiegel 08-28-2006 06:29 PM

windowlicker is cool shiitz. milkman is hilarious. stone in focus is very relaxing. now go listen!

spencermiles 09-21-2006 01:27 AM

The Hangable Auto Bulb EP is pretty fantastic.

Can't go wrong with Druqks - vordhosbn is one of my favorite IDM tracks of all times.

Richard d. James album of course.

And even a lot of his new Analord stuff is pretty sick.

glazedface 09-29-2006 03:36 PM

aphex twin is kinda neat but those lyrics...oh man...too weird even for me

djnfinity 10-12-2006 05:54 PM

Druqs

tardis 10-21-2006 02:16 AM

I haven't listened to all his releases, but out of the ones I do have I really like I Care Because You Do
