The Music Quiz

Heya!

I thought it might be fun to have an ongoing music quiz thread so I'm giving it a shot. I'll post questions and when people answer them, I'll try to post new ones. If anyone would like to help keep this going, so long as there's nothing else going on - feel free to add questions of your own. They can be about anything related to music and in any shape or form.

I'm gonna start out with an 80s lyrics challenge. You answer by providing the missing words from these lyrical lines. There are only two rules :

RULES :
  • If you answer, you have to provide answers to all of them. Not answering all of them immediately disqualifies you.
  • Don't look for solutions elsewhere on the net. No cheating, man!

Alright, here are some lines from 80s pop hits. Provide me with the missing words.
  1. I'll never be _______ ________ - You're a creature of the night
  2. I was beat, incomplete - I'd been had - I was ____ and _____
  3. ________ _______ is not my lover - She's just a girl that claims that I am the one
  4. We're no strangers to _____ - You know the _____ and so do I
  5. I _____ rock n roll, so put another _____ on the jukebox, baby
  6. Near a tree by the river, there's a ______ in the _______
  7. We got to install _________ _________ - Custom ______ deliveries
  8. _______ come alive, you can ________ right through your life
  9. Her hands a are never cold - She's got ______ ______ eyes
  10. I'm never gonna ______ again - _______ feet have got no rhythmn

I think these should be somewhat easy to start with. Remember, not providing words to all ten disqualifies you. If you don't know, make some guesses!

Although I'm pretty sure this will turn out a mess, I'll try and award some points to participants for the fun of it. For now, one point per correct line should be good. ;)

edit :

Duh, managed to mess up some lyrics myself .. come on. Noone? :D

khfreek 02-12-2009 03:34 PM

  1. I'll never be alone again - You're a creature of the night
  2. I was beat, incomplete - I'd been had - I was lost and cold
  3. Billie Jean is not my lover - She's just a girl that claims that I am the one
  4. We're no strangers to lo-ho-ho-hove - You know the ru-hules and so do I
  5. I love rock n roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby
  6. Near a tree by the river, there's a bluebird in the maytree
  7. We got to install new computers - Custom Best Buy deliveries
  8. Just come alive, you can run right through your life
  9. Her hands are never cold - She's got stone cold eyes
  10. I'm never gonna dance again - these feet have got no rhythmn

1, 3, 4, 5, 10 I actually know. I feel like 6 is Stairway but of course that's not 80's, went along with it anyway because I can't remember the words exactly <.< The rest are jokes/guesses

Also, it's "IN the jukebox"

Alright .. Let's see, the ones you got right are : 3, 4 & 5 ..

You get three points. Your 80s hits lyrics skills are so far unimpressive!

I've listed the solutions below. The quiz-words are colored and in bold. Red are the ones you didn't get and green are the ones you got correct. I'll also provide the artist and song.
  1. I'll never be Maria Magdalena - You're a creature of the night ~ Sandra - Maria Magdalena
  2. I was beat, incomplete - I'd been had - I was sad and blue ~ Madonna - Like a Virgin
  3. Billie Jean is not my lover - She's just a girl that claims that I am the one ~ Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

Isn't that what I wrote? ;)

I suspect you meant to write "ON". I was wondering about it and I looked it up. All the sources I looked at said "in".

I'll post another lyrics quiz in a few.

I edited the lyrics in my post, they're still wrong in the original.

And lol, I was so wrong about 1.

Oh duh! I was looking up sources to check against your correction .. :usehead:

Oh well, here are the next lines - the theme is still 80s hits :
  1. I walked along the avenue .. I never thought I'd meet a ______ like _____ ..
  2. Stand and deliver - Your _______ or your _______ !
  3. I'll beeeee gooooone .. In a ____ or _____
  4. I always feel like - somebody's _______ me .. And I have no _______
  5. It's tricky to rock a _______ to rock a _______ that's right on time
  6. Your pops caught you smokin' and he said _____ _____ !
  7. I wanna ____ ! .. I want to _____ !
  8. Come on _______, Oh - I swear (well he means) At this moment - you mean _________
  9. Girls on ______ - two minutes later - girls on ________
  10. We're leaving together - but still its ________ - And maybe we'll come back - to ______, who can tell

I think some of these might be a little harder than the previous .. but maybe not.

khfreek 02-12-2009 05:55 PM

I'll let someone older take these ones.

iksosept 02-17-2009 07:30 AM

I'm pretty sure about 7 and the first word of 8
other that that, there's a big question mark above my head

Guybrush 02-17-2009 07:33 AM

Yeah, seems people either are not good at lyrics or they don't know 80s hits or possibly both. It might just be the 80s hits, so I could try to narrow it down a bit so that perhaps it's genre specific and possibly from another decade or I'll try a new quiz-form altogether .. ;)

But not until someone answers them!

I think they're all a breeze. It's easy for me to say since I made them, though.

edit :

Looked'em over and while some are perhaps a bit hard, I feel I can say with relative certainty that at least 90% of the users here should've heard song 3 and song 10 - likely several times.

khfreek 02-17-2009 07:44 AM

  1. I walked along the avenue .. I never thought I'd meet a girl like you ..
  2. Stand and deliver - Your penis or your salute !
  3. I'll beeeee gooooone .. In a day or two
  4. I always feel like - somebody's watching me .. And I have no privacy
  5. It's tricky to rock a rock to rock a rock that's right on time
  6. Your pops caught you smokin' and he said holy sh*t!
  7. I wanna rock! .. I want to rock!
  8. Come on Eileen, Oh - I swear (well he means) At this moment - you mean everything
  9. Girls on girls - two minutes later - girls on girls
  10. We're leaving together - but still its forever - And maybe we'll come back - to hell, who can tell

Harder than the last one.

Guybrush 02-17-2009 08:05 AM

Nice attempt! :D

Here are the solutions. The ones you got right are in green as before.
  1. I walked along the avenue .. I never thought I'd meet a girl like you ~ A Flock of Seagulls - I ran (So Far Away)
  2. Stand and deliver - Your money or your life! ~ Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver
  3. I'll beeeee gooooone .. In a day or two ~ A-Ha - Take On Me
  4. I always feel like - somebody's watching me .. And I have no privacy ~ Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
  5. It's tricky to rock a rhyme to rock a rhyme that's right on time ~ Run-D.M.C. - Tricky
  6. Your pops caught you smokin' and he said no way! ~ Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)
  7. I wanna rock! .. I want to rock! ~ Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock
  8. Come on Eileen, Oh - I swear (well he means) At this moment - you mean everything ~ Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen
  9. Girls on film - two minutes later - girls on film ~ Duran Duran - Girls on Film
  10. We're leaving together - but still its farewell - And maybe we'll come back - to earth, who can tell ~ Europe - The Final Countdown

You got 1, 3, 4, 7 and 8 correct. That means you got 5 points for a total of 8 .. An improvement on your previous attempt. ;)

Stand by for more quiz-stuff!

khfreek 02-17-2009 08:06 AM

Holy crap, 4 was a total guess.

Guybrush 02-17-2009 08:08 AM

Wow, that is a good guess .. You've probably heard the song before, though. :)

Guybrush 02-17-2009 08:34 AM

Alright, this time I'm doing 70s hits. Most of these are incredibly popular and so this should be very easy for most .. maybe more people will be motivated. :D
  1. By the rivers of _______ - there we sat down - Ye-eah we wept - when we remembered _______
  2. Heathcliff, it's me, I’m Cathy, I've come home and I´m - so ______, let me in your _______
  3. Sing us a song, you're the ______ ______
  4. You are the Dancing Queen, young and ______, only _________
  5. ______ is the time, is the place, is the motion - ______ is the way we are feeling
  6. Video killed the _______ ______.
  7. Do a little ______ - make a little _____ - Get down tonight!
  8. In the ______, yes, you can sail the seven seas - In the ______, yes, you can put your mind at ease
  9. Ground Control to Major Tom - Take your ________ pills and put your ______ on
  10. Oh yeah - it was like lightning, everybody was _______ - And the music was soothing, and they all started _______

I've made an attempt to more often leave in some of the crucial words to help people along. Major Tom and Dancing Queen should be good examples. ;)

Now solve!

no way! that's what I would have guessed aswell..
I also would have guessed 1,3 and 5 correctly, can't believe that. But those words just seemed to suit well

(number 7 would have been wrong though)

still not encouraged to do the next. I just don't recognize the songs, at all.
Someone else do it!

I'll just continue to brag about what I would have known afterwards

Not even phrases like "ground control to Major Tom" or "You are the dancing queen"?

Come on! These are some of the world's most popular songs, at least coming from the 70s and one of those particularly on MB, I should imagine. :)

BoopieJones 02-18-2009 08:24 PM

1. By the rivers of Timbucktoo - there we sat down - Ye-eah we wept - when we remembered you
2. Heathcliff, it's me, I’m Cathy, I've come home and I´m - so horny, let me in your pants
3. Sing us a song, you're the piano man
4. You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
5. Now is the time, is the place, is the motion - love is the way we are feeling
6. Video killed the radio star.
7. Do a little dance - make a little love - Get down tonight!
8. In the desert, yes, you can sail the seven seas - In the desert, yes, you can put your mind at ease
9. Ground Control to Major Tom - Take your pain pills and put your earphones on
10. Oh yeah - it was like lightning, everybody was moving - And the music was soothing, and they all started grooving

I tried. I knew a few.:P

(I really want to know what two is. Oh Withering Heights! )

Another lackluster performance, but you got a few right!
  1. By the rivers of Babylon - there we sat down - Ye-eah we wept - when we remembered Zion
  2. Heathcliff, it's me, I’m Cathy, I've come home and I´m - so cold, let me in your window
  3. Sing us a song, you're the piano man
  4. You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
  5. Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion - Grease is the way we are feeling
  6. Video killed the radio star

  9. Ground Control to Major Tom - Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
  10. Oh yeah - it was like lightning, everybody was frightening - And the music was soothing, and they all started grooving

So there's 4 right lines here. That's four points for you! However, for such an easy lyrics quiz, I'm afraid I can't say I'm impressed.

The songs are :
  1. Boney M - Rivers of Babylon
  2. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
  3. Billy Joel - Piano Man
  4. ABBA - Dancing Queen
  5. Frankie Valli - Grease
  6. The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
  7. KC & The Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight
  8. Village People - In the Navy

aw damn i actually knew 5 8 9 and 10, pfft

Guybrush 02-25-2009 08:36 AM

Damn, I forgot posting the new questions .. then I moved back up to the arctic and utterly forgot about it.

Anyways, since it seems people are not really eagerly competing to finish my lyrical challenges, I'll try some questions instead. The same rules apply. You shouldn't look up the answers on external sites and you have to answer all of them!
  1. Which famous black artist got shot and killed by his father in 1984?
  2. What do you call the alpine (and other areas) folk form of singing characterized by rapid and repeated changes between the vocal and falsetto register?
  3. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth calls another rock legend his "mentor". Who is this mysterious mentor figure?
  4. In 1976 (UK & US), an incredibly successful eponymous debut album was released. The genre was hard rock and by 2003, it had sold 17x platinum, making it one of the best-selling debut albums in the world. The band behind the release took it's name from an american city. Which band is it?
  5. U2's pop song "Pride (In the Name of Love)" from the album "The Unforgettable Fire", 1984, is about which famous deceased person .. ?
  6. Bob Rock was brought in as producer to make Metallica's "Black Album" released in 1991. Before that, he had produced the albums "Raw Tracks" and "Dr. Feelgood" from which american hair-metal band?
  7. Which german singer has the 80s hit "99 luftballons" (english version "99 red balloons")?
  8. What is Johnny Rotten's real name?
  9. Neil Peart is famous for his drumming skills. He is best known for playing with which famous prog band .. ?
  10. June 30th 2000, at the Roskilde festival in Denmark, nine fans were crushed, suffocated and killed when the audience rushed to the stage and things got a bit too tight. Which band was on stage during the tragedy?

I know many of you will think these questions are perhaps a bit too hard, but I'm hoping it'll lure out some of the lurker-geeks.

barbarella 02-25-2009 09:28 AM

Well I know 4 of them straight off, but as for the Rock ones I'm going to have to do a bit of swotting up- I've got no chance!

jackhammer 02-25-2009 09:33 AM

1. Marvin ***e
2. Yodelling?
3. ?
4. boston
5. Martin Luther king
6. Motley Crue

Without a doubt the best attempt so far .. :)

Marvin was right, yodelling was right, Boston was of course right .. Martin Luther King is missing Jr. to his name, but that's no biggie, Motley Crue is right and so is Nena .. Johnny is a very good attempt, but it should have been John Joseph or perhaps just John. Rush is also right.

I'll just list the solutions I'm not giving you points for :
  • 3. Alice Cooper
  • 8. John Joseph Lydon
  • 10. Pearl Jam

That gives jackhammer 7 points and a 7 points total!

Stand by for more quiz-stuff. :)

Guybrush 02-26-2009 07:47 AM

Alright, I was a bit worried that the last would get difficult, but seeing how well Lee did, I'm not too worried anymore. Here are some more questions of varying difficulty. I expect most will know some but not all of these. If you don't know any, go and learn!

As before, if you answer, you have to answer all or you get no points, even if correct. Also, no looking up stuff.
  1. Robert Fripp doesn't like to stand while playing guitar on stage. Instead he prefers to ... ?
  2. Phil Collins eventually became the frontman of the prog band Genesis. Who sang and fronted the band before him?
  3. In the late 60s while playing a concert, the band Cream invited a now popular but then largely unknown artist up on stage to jam with them on the song "Killing floor". Word has it the guest played Eric Clapton's socks off, outstaging him on his own concert. Who was this guest?
  4. Courtney Love is the lead singer for the band Hole. She also had a two-years marriage with a popular grunge icon. Who?
  5. The producer behind hit albums like Beatles "Abbey Road" and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" also has his own music "project". What is it called?
  6. Elton John's song "Candle in the Wind" was written in 1973 as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. In 1997, he rerecorded it as a tribute to who .. ?
  7. Ronnie James Dio is a metal legend and is well known for singing with Black Sabbath and, of course, the band "Dio". In the 70s, he was also recruited into a successful metal band by Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore. What was the name of this band?
  8. What remains to this date the world's best selling album?
  9. Give me Band / Album / Songtitle to go with the following lyrics "London is drowning and I - live by the river!"
  10. Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" doesn't just contain perhaps the world's most well-known guitar riff, it also recounts a true story. From the lyrics, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of invention were having a concert at the gambling house (Montreux Casino). Something happens during the concert. What?

Come on guys!

jackhammer 02-26-2009 08:46 AM

1. Sit
2. Peter Gabriel
3. ?
4. Kurt Cobain
5. Alan parsons
6. Princess Diana
7. Rainbow
8. Thriller- Michael Jackson
9. The Clash-London's Calling- Same title
10. A fire engulfed the stage

As for 3 a rough guess Rory Gallacher?

Meph1986 02-26-2009 08:47 AM

I could only get 5 :(

Piss Me Off 02-26-2009 08:49 AM

3. Is Jimi Hendrix isn't it?

Wow, another great attempt by Lee :)

Fripp likes to sit, correct. Peter Gabriel is correct. 3, as Piss Me Off posted, should have been Jimi Hendrix. Kurt Cobain is correct - Alan Parsons is nearly correct, but the full name of his "music project" (it was a hint) was "The Alan Parsons Project". Princess Di is correct, so is Rainbow and Thriller and London Calling by The Clash is good. I'm also giving you right on the last. According to the song, "some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground".

That gives jackhammer 8 more points for a 15 points total. :)

Great job!

I'll post more in a bit!

I misread number 3 and was going to say Hendrix but you said 'a now popular artist' I mistook that for someone still alive today and then was stumped :( and Alan Parsons is nitpicking. You included project so by inserting the name it is obvious what is implied. I demand a recount :D

Guybrush 02-27-2009 05:23 AM

Actually, I thought something like that might've happened regarding Parsons .. (the group is more popular than him in a way anyways) I might give you one for that. ;)

Here's the new set by the way!
  1. Bon Scott was AC/DC's singer, but died in 1980. Afterwards, the band considered breaking up, but decided to hire a new singer and continue. The first post-bon album released the same year he died was "Back in Black" which is now only behind Thriller as the most sold album and officially the best selling album by a band. What's the name of AC/DC's singer who was recruited in time to make this masterpiece?
  2. Michael Angelo Batio is one of many known guitar virtuosos. He's known for playing a somewhat special guitar. What's so special about it? Name it or describe roughly.
  3. Which wacky and zany bespeckled fun-punk band played the minor hit "Nellie the Elephant"?
  4. The album "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" was a psychedelia landmark from the group by the same name. If I'm thinking of a hot hit from that album, what is the title of the song I'm thinking of?
  5. David Bowie's song "I'm Afraid of Americans" was co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno, but a mix-collaboration version with a certain american industrial rock group would produce the most popular version with an accompanying music video. Which group?
  6. Not long ago, Coldplay was (again) sued for plagiarism by a famous guitarist for stealing significant portions of his song for their hit "Viva la Vida" from their latest album. Which famous guitarist?
  7. Marilyn Manson has covered many songs, among them popular 80s hit "Tainted Love". However, the song was first popularized with another cover version in 1981 by which english synthpop duo?
  8. Which famous country artist co-starred in all three of the Smokey and the Bandits films and also got a hit with the theme for the first movie?
  9. Which now deceased austrian pop artist made a "rap song" about Amadeus Mozart?
  10. Who made the soundtrack for the movie "Edward Scissorhands"?

Because Lee has done so well, I'm making them perhaps even harder.

Really good attempt here by Pianogirl :)

Brian Johnson is right, Quad Guitar is alright but I wish there was a description - Toy Dolls is correct. Nine Inch Nails, Satriani, Soft Cell, Falco .. all those correct.

I'll list the solutions I did not give you points for :
  • 4. Fire
  • 8. Jerry Reed
  • 10. Danny Elfman

That gives Pianogirl75 7 points for a 7 points total!

I'm drunk at the moment and don't usually have internet these days and on top of that, I'm going on a cabin trip for the weekend so I won't be able to post new questions until monday. If anyone else want to give it a shot, go ahead. :)

Alright, next set :
1. Who was or is this?

http://www.shoutmouth.com/index.php/...Y4MGUuanBn.jpg

2. Varg Vikernes is perhaps the most notorious black metaller around. In 1993, he knife-killed Mayhem's then guitarist Euronymus and got convicted for the murder along with some church arsons. In jail, he formulated his nazi-ish ideologies and also released two more albums under his one-man black metal project. What is this project called?

3. Robert Wyatt is a popular figure from which english-originated musical scene .. ?

4. The Prodigy's music video for the song Smack My Bitch Up was considered somewhat controversial. The video was filmed from a first person perspective, meaning it was "seen from a person's eyes". This person goes on a drinking binge, getting into fights, groping women and finally having sex with a prostitute (I think). What is the twist at the very end?

5. Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997) was shot and killed in Los Angeles after attending a party held by VIBE Magazine. When his driver stopped at a stop-sign, another car pulled up and opened fire on his vehicle, hitting him with six shots and killing him almost instantaneous. The murder case is still open. What was Christophers artist name?

6. One of the world's most famous guitar virtuosos claims he was raised by chickens in a chicken coup and now wants to warn everyone of the fast-food chicken holocaust. He wears a mask to hide his identity and is amazingly productive, having put out more than 25 solo albums since his debut in the early 90s and have collaborated on over twice as many other albums. Which artist is this?

7. The following lyrics are from a 1987 hit : "If you hear something late at night - some kind of trouble, some kind of fight - just don't ask me what it was". The song is about an evasive, abused boy who lives upstairs from you. What is the name of the song and who is the artist?

8. Provide me with artist and songname (although appearant) for the following cheesy karaoke movie :

9. Which famous punker made a cover of Paul Anka's "My Way" (made famous by Frank Sinatra) in 1978?

10. In 1975, Hawkwind's then bassist got arrested for possession of cocaine (thought it was actually amphetamine) by the border police when the band was going from USA into Canada. Fed up with their bassist's erratic behaviour, he was kicked from the band. However, the bass player would help form a new popular band named after the last song he wrote for Hawkwind. Who is that bassist and what was the new band?
Some are easy, some are hard. I've tried to span more genres and since I guess it's hard for one person to have broad enough knowledge, I've added a bit more trivia than usual perhaps. ;)

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-02-2009 10:06 AM

1. Prince
3. Canturbury

8. Scorpions Winds Of Change

Alright, although Biggie is a bit skimpy (Biggie Smalls or Notorious B.I.G. please!), every answer you guys gave are correct. The ones you didn't get are :
2. Burzum
7. Luca by Suzanne Vega
However, since you both failed to stick to the rules, you both recieve 0 points for a total of 0 points.

You have to answer all, not just a select few!
