now that I think about it, (this might sound pretty derogative), but i find women repelling when it comes to comedy. That is, they are not funny in the least IMO. It's not that theyre women,...ehh idk why really.
I think there's a greater percentage of men who think they're funny when actually they aren't.
God, one of those men was at our newyears party last week. He's a really nice guy, but he really made some very, very bad jokes that went on until someone laughed... Ouch.
I think we can use It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and SNL as examples for this:
I feel like a lot of time we males find a female funny in when she's self-deprecating like Dee from Always Sunny (This happens a lot in movies) or is put in an akward situation... for a female.
I think you can also say this about Friends.
One of the best female funny characters was Ellaine from Seinfeld. We loved to laugh... AT her.
We laugh AT men all the time too. The ones that play the 'stupid male husband' to death... But there is a lot more laughing WITH a comedian when it's a male than when it's a female. Right?

Secondly is, much of the heart of comedy is relating, and I don't think men relate to women particularly well. I believe it's a matter of women being under represented in comedy, not a matter of women having no sense of humour.

While I dont agree more men in general are less funny than women. Your point is well said in the sense of the being able to relate part. I mean historicly we men never have done much good in that area. Stands to be good reason that comedy shouldnt be any different.
I think women can be funny to other women. I think senses of humor varies with gender (although, I could be wrong - some people act differently than what is expected of his or her gender). There are some truly funny women though. I can't remember her name, but I watched a comedian recently give her bit, and I thought she was hilarious. I will admit that there are more funny male comedians than women, but I blame it more on the system of the "business." That and that women may be pressured into not entering that field. Not really sure.
And as per JackPat's post - I think I generally like women's sense of humor better than men's. Men can be so obnoxious and too often rely on gross out humor. Basically I just find when a woman is funny, she's really funny. Often by employing sarcasm or wit, which are what I enjoy the most in comedy.

Good point. Larry the Cable Guy is the epitome of what you are talking about. Not to mention they make so many sexual-related comments. Not always though, but it's very rare to see a male comedian not do so.
As I see it, apart from that at the title ("Can women be funny?"), there is also another (implicit) question here. And more or less, it would be like this: "Do women lose their feminity when they're funny?".
Anyway, I've voted for option D (Depends on the woman and situation). Two examples:
To me, Cameron Díaz was disappointing, tacky and coarse. On the contrary, in my eyes Brittany Murphy didn't lose a bit of her feminity. I think she was as delightful as always , and in fact I loved to see she had that sense of humor. I guess it's a matter of personal tastes.
I don't really understand how women can lose their "femininity" by being funny? I mean, if they're genuinely funny, I don't think "Oh god, she's so funny, it's too bad it makes her look sooooo much less like a woman", I think "Goddamn, this bitch is funny". I don't really see what you're saying here. I guess if you're watching someone like Chelsea Handler, I can understand that statement, mainly because she is not funny and she degrades herself for laughs. That's tacky.
